Tension mounts at the top of the League

 

An interesting week in Division 1 of the Kendal & District Table Tennis League saw the 3 title contenders all in action. Leaders, Burton A, defeated Dalton by 28 points to 9. Both Baxendale brothers were unbeaten including impressive victories over the higher ranked Gareth Brunton. Natland A lost ground on the leaders due to a disappointing 21-15 win against Dallam A. Louise Thompson had an off-night and Roger Pimblett was beaten 11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 11-5 by James Neal. IBIS continued their progress up the table with a 28-4 demolition of Burton B. Dennis Hooley secured 4 points for Burton including the 8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 defeat of Peter Rushton. Jake Haygarth’s 3 wins against Burton C including a stunning 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 3-11, 12-10 win against Chris Knowles, having trailed 10-8 in the decider, took him to the top of the Division 1 averages.

 

In Division 2, Natland D consolidated their position at the top with a comprehensive 30-8 win against Crook D. Mick Taylor, Devun Whitehead and Archie Catnach won all 9 singles matches although Devun Whitehead was taken to 11-9 in the 5th by John Wood. Mick Taylor and Devun Whitehead then teamed up to win a close doubles match in 5 sets. Unbeaten Crook B consolidated second place via a 23-18 defeat of fellow promotion chasers, Natland C. Mike Taylor was man of the match with 3 wins in the singles, closely followed by Natland’s Andrea Yorkisch, who beat both Phil Swift and Rin Colombi before falling 9-11, 11-4, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11 to Mike Taylor.
