Westfield A suffered their first defeat in almost two years as they went down 6-4 against Corby Smash A’s three Wilsons in the Premier Division.
Smash fielded their strongest possible team for just the second time this season and raced into a 2-0 lead when Sam Wilson beat Kevin Bird and dad Colin beat Roumen Stefanov.
Steve Silk reduced the arrears by beating Adam Wilson but three matches later it was 5-1 to Smash.
Defender Sam bagelled Stefanov in a straight-game win, Adam claimed the scalp of Bird in five ends and Colin edged out Silk in four.
It was Sam who sealed the win when he came from 2-0 down to beat Silk 8-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-9 to make it 6-2 to Smash.
Bird crushed Colin in three ends before he and Brian Wooding won a consolation doubles for the reigning champions.
Harborough A made themselves favourites to avoid the drop as they beat relegation rivals Westfield C 7-3 at Church Langton.
It was the visitors who took the initiative when Matt Rushton and Steve Hobbs beat James Lancaster and Nathan Thompson in five ends respectively.
Westfield had the chance to make it 3-0 but Sam Wildman saw a match point come and go as he went down 13-11 in the fifth to Kevin Shield.
Harborough moved 3-2 ahead before Hobbs beat Shield to level it up again.
With the match on a knife edge the hosts won the next four games which could prove pivotal in the end of season run-in.
Wildman and Rushton lost in five to Thompson and Shield, before Harborough won the doubles convincingly.
On an adjacent table Harborough B went down 9-1 to Westfield B but it was far closer than the score suggested.
Mike Brocklebank scored Harborough’s solitary point with a superb win over Nicole Bird.
The bottom side could easily have picked up four as Liam Burnham wasted match points against both Bird and Matt Horrocks, who also had to come from two down against Brocklebank.
Results: Westfield A 4 (Bird, Silk, Stefanov, Bird/Wooding) Corby Smash A 6 (S Wilson 3, C Wilson 2, A Wilson), Harborough A 7 (Lancaster 2, Shield 2, Thompson 2, Thompson/Shield) Westfield C 3 (Hobbs 2, Rushton) Harborough B 1 (Brocklebank) Westfield B 9 (Smalley 3, Horrocks 3, Bird 2, Smalley/Horrocks)
