Tom Maynard wins Band 1 at Doncaster Grand Prix

FEBRUARY 25 2012 - Congratulations to Tom Maynard on winning his first Band 1 event at the Tees Sport Doncaster Grand Prix this weekend.

Tom dealt with the challenge of Stephen Beerling 3-1 before, in one of the surprises of the day, beating top seed Niall Cameron 3-1 in the semi-finals.

The other half of the draw saw Guernsey's Garry Dodd beating Michael O'Driscoll, who had previously knocked out Kingfisher's Lloyd Gregory, and Emran Hussain to reach the final. beati

In the final Tom took the early advantage leading 1-0 and 2-1, before Gary levelled at 2-2.  In the end, despite Gary’s best efforts, Tom took the title in the fifth game 11-6.

This was probably the most prestigious title that Tom has won to date.  He continued his fine form the following day, reaching the Under-21s semi-final where he eventually lost, after a five-game tussle, against England no. 7 Matt Ware.

Having started his table tennis career as a Kingfisher player and, although now ranked 19 in England and playing professionally for Neuhausen in Switzerland, Tom can still be found training at Kingfisher most weeks.
