APRIL 28th – Instead of organising a members-only Under-18 tournament as Kingfisher has in the past, for the junior events in this year's Club Championships the committee decided to accept entries from non-members who attend coaching classes or training at the club and to run three additional age group tournaments. With more events and a larger and more diverse entry, the event was a definite success.
However, with more than 70 matches played over a five-hour period, the tournament could not have taken place without the enthusiastic assistance of a small group of volunteers, in particular our thanks go to Allen Pack, Chis Pusey, Sonia Gallen, Andy Yon, Peter Bradley and Eric Van Looy.
On the table it was Josh Gallen who had the best day, picking up both the Junior Singles and Under-13 titles, whilst Leo Long won the Under-15 tournament and Jamie Liu took the Under-11 Singles.
Josh, Jamie and Leo with their trophies
Under-11 Singles: Having narrowly beaten Joe Barraclough in the semis, Lorcan Gallen faced Jerrel Whiteman’s conqueror, Jamie Liu in the final where a consistent and tenacious Jamie won in straight games ... Final: Jamie Liu v Lorcan Gallen: 11-9, 11-7, 11-8
Under-13 Singles: In the quarters, Lorcan Gallen beat Katie Shepherd, Sam Liu beat Isaac Farnworth, Jamie Liu beat Joe Barraclough and Joshua Gallen beat Taylor Nobes. In the semis, Sam beat Lorcan and Josh beat Jamie ... Final: Josh Gallen v Sam Liu: 11-5, 11-5, 11-6
Under-15 Singles: In the quarters, Leo Long beat Katie Shepherd, Sam Liu beat Daniel Graham, Kevin Gurung beat Ieuan Davies and Josh Gallen beat Isaac Farnworth. In the semis, Leo beat Sam to face Josh, who had earlier dispatched Kevin, in the final. After sharing the first two games, it looked possible that Josh, who had previously beaten Leo in the Junior semis, would repeat his triumph in the Under-15s. Such a possibility was short-lived as Leo exerted his superiority to rapidly take the third game 11-2 and wrap-up the fourth 11-8 ... Final: Leo Long v Josh Gallen: 11-5, 10-12, 11-2, 11-8
Junior Singles: The last eight comprised Leo Long, Ieuan Davies, Josh Gallen, Joe Barraclough, Sam Liu, Isaac Farnworth, Jamie Liu and Kevin Gurung. Josh and Leo faced each other in a monumental semi-final, and probably the best match of the tournament, in which Josh narrowly scraped through 16-14 in the fifth to record his first victory over Leo. The two Liu brothers contested the other semi-final with the elder, Sam, winning three-straight. Learning from his defeat in the Under-15s, Sam immediately put Josh under pressure by taking the first game before Josh exerted control, winning the next three games 5, 3 and 5 ... Final: Josh Gallen v Sam Liu: 8-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-5
