Leamington Championships report

The first stage of the Leamington League Closed Table tennis Championships were held last Sunday at the St Nicholas Park leisure center. With entries coming from far and wide around Leamington it was gratifying to lose only one player to the inclement weather.

The day produced some superb play in some of the best conditions that the championships have ever been held in.

Three finals were decided on the day. In the Under 11 Boys Singles Robbie Fitchford of Free Church was too strong for the Speller brothers, also from Free Church, who had a real battle between them for Brody Speller to take the second place. The Under 13 Girls Singles was won by Lisa Rinnhofer(Colebridge) with Katie Singleton(Free Church) runner up. The Over 60's Mens final was an all Colebridge battle John Taylor overcoming John Chandler in the final

In the Mens and Womens singles all went perfectly to plan, the 8 seeds in the Mens Singles contesting the quarter finals and the top four seeds, Ian Ferguson(Colebridge), Mark Jackson(St Georges), Jesse Kendrick-Hill(Rugby) and Gary Webb(St georges) will contest the semi finals and final at Ashorne Village Hall on the 13th of April. In the Womens Singles similarly the top two seeds, Kate Hughes (Colebridge) and Tracey Green(St Georges) will be contesting the final.

The Grade 1 Singles provided Jesse Kendrick Hill(Rugby) with a final contest against Kate Hughes(Colebridge), notable in his progress was a 5 game win over Mens No 1 Seed Ian Ferguson in the quarters. The Grade 2 Singles was one for the fast improving young guns in the league, Sam Wiggins(Free Church) faces Lee Dorning(Free Church) in that final. Sam Wiggins also contests the Grade 3 Singles final this time against Harry Purewal(Free Church). The Grade 4 Singles sees another Free Church player Adam Cofler take on Jon Ablett of Eathorpe while the Grade 5 Singles will be contested between Sam Bradley(Free Church) and Shaun Martin(Eathorpe)

In the events for the younger players it was all Rugby in the Junior Boys Singles where Jesse Kendrik-Hill faces Anshul Satsangi in the final. The Junior Girls Singles final will be a battle between Holly Thopmpon(Eathorpe) and Lisa Rinnhofer(Colebridge). The Cadet Boys Singles is another Free Church contest Timmy Cooper the no 1 seed faces unseeded Samuel Weaving in that final. The Cadet Girls Singles will see No 1 seed Olivia Fletcher(Free Church) take on no 2 seed Lisa Rinnhofer(Colebridge)

The Under 13 Boys Singles final provides a second appearance for Adam Cofler(Free Church) who will meet Jack Green(Free Church) in the Final. The youngest members of the Green and Rinnhofer families are due to face each other in the Under 11 Girls Singles final, Milly Green(Free Church) will take on Sophie Rinnhofer(Colebridge).

In the Doubles events  the Mens Doubles final will be between No 1 seeds Ian Ferguson(Colebridge) and Jesse Kendrick-Hill(Rugby) who face No 2 seeds Mark Jackson and Earl Sweeney(St Georges). The Womens Doubles will be between mother and daughter pair Tracey and Olivia Fletcher(St Georges/Free Church) and Kate Hughes(Colebridge) partnering Jo Outhwaite(Rugby). The Mixed Doubles will be another battle of the seeds Kate Hughes and Ian Ferguson(Colebridge) taking on Tracey Fletcher and Earl Sweeney(St Georges).

The Junior Boys Doubles will be a contest of the No 1 seeded pair from Rugby Jesse Kendrick-Hill and Anshul Satsangi who will face Timmy Cooper and Lee Dorning(Free Church). In the Junior Girls Doubles Olivia Fletcher(Free Church) partners Holly Thompson(Eathorpe) and they will take on Jennifer Singleton and Katie Singleton(Free Church).

The Veterans events did not go to the script at all in the Veterans Singles Final No 3 Seed Simon Griew(WCC), who defeated the No 1 seed Mark Jackson(St Georges) in the semis. will play No 4 seed Earl Sweeney(St Georges) while in the over 50 Singles No 1 seed Gary Webb(St Georges) faces unseeded Murray Stevenson(WCC) who defeated Earl Sweeney(St Georges) the No 2 seed in the Semi final.
