2018 Handicap Cup Report - Semi Finals

Charnwood Blockers 352 v 333 Unicorn Curlews

The Blockers trio of Rafe Cherry, Chris Barlow and Adrian Stevenson edged this tight encounter, despite Curlews doing everything they could to eat into their 62-point handicap. Rafe started very soundly against Malcolm Allsop, taking two games and only conceding 1 point overall, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11 and Chris performed equally as well against Guan Zhang, finishing with an 8-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9 scoreline.

The visitors finally started to make inroads into the deficit in the doubles, as Malcolm and Guan beat Rafe and Adrian, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 11-2 and Malcolm then beat Chris by 10 points, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7.

Any hopes of Curlews closing the gap to a more manageable total disappeared soon after though, as Rafe defeated Guan 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, and despite a 47-28 point win in the final doubles, Blockers had already done enough to secure their place in the final.

Hugglescote Hornets 337 v 350 Charnwood Choppers

The second semi final saw Choppers start with a 40-point advantage, and this was maintained as Dan Jones shared two games apiece with Eric Baker to finish with 33 points each. David Handley took the first three games against Tony Cook, but Tony hit back in the fourth, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7, 6-11 to limit the points conceded to just 3.

Another fourth game slip up meant that Dan and David only gained another 7 points back in defeating Eric and Ian Kennedy in the first doubles, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11 and things looked to be slipping away from the Hornets as Eric opened up a two game advantage over David, only for the Hornets player to hit back and steal a few more points back on the total, ending 7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6.

There was little to separate Dan and Tony however, with Dan securing only a 1 point gain in an 11-8, 11-13, 9-11, 12-10 encounter, and despite the home side’s best efforts in the final doubles, Ian and Tony combined for the visit to restrict David and Dan to an 11-13, 11-8, 11-3, 15-13 scoreline and ease into the final by 13 points overall.
