17 year old Zak is a Show Stopper
17 year old Zak Melrose won his first Show Stopper title in the Mansfield Table Tennis league on Monday 14th December 2015 beating Tony Swain ( last year’s runner up also ) 2-0 in the final which finished at 12.30am.
The Showstoppers is a Handicap knockout event played on 1 night with 4 groups of 6 all playing each other and the top 2 qualify to the last 8.
Zak won the closest group topping group 1 with 7 points, Pete Hodgson came second with 6 points and then there were 3 players all on 5, one of these players was Dean Brookes the current holder and three times winner who surprisingly came 5th.
In group 2 Tony Swain topped his group with Adrian Smith just 1 point behind in second, group 3 was won by another young player 16 year old Jonathan Heath with Erlands Skels again just 1 point behind and in the final group Jim Westwood topped with 8 points with John Smith second with 6 points in a very topsy turvy group.
It was then a straight knock out competition best of 3 to 21, Pete Hodgson decided to concede due to how late it was so Jonathan Heath got a bye, Tony Swain beat John Smith 2-0 and Zak Melrose beat Erlands Skels 2-0, the final Quarter-Final was a marathon with Jim Westwood beating Adrian Smith 2-1 in 3 very close games.
Due to how long this Quarter took, the other Semi-Final had already been played with Tony Swain beating Jonathan Heath 2-0, a tired Jim had to then had to go straight into his Semi-Final against Zak and lost 2-0.
The Final was a deserving final and very entertaining to boot and although Zak won the title 2-0 they were very close fought games with some fantastic rallies and brilliant table tennis played by both parties.
