Riots win the Shippam Shield

RAVENSHEAD RIOTS WIN THE SHIPPAM SHIELD

TABLE TENNIS

The Curtain closed on the 2015-16 season with the Shippam Shield Final played at St Joseph’s Social Club between Division 1 Ravenshead Riots and Division 2 Hucknall 50+.

The Shippam Shield is a Handicap event where every point played counts, both teams of 3 play each other in 2 games to 21 and all the points are added together along with the Handicap.

Division 1 Riots had to give Division 2 Hucknall 50+ 168 points start which meant they had to average a 21-11 score for each game. In the first match Kerry Harvey beat Andy King (21-10, 21-9), then in the next game the 2 captains played each other and Dick Johnson for Hucknall took the first game off Matt Fowkes 21-17, however Matt bounced back in the second to win 21-8.

From here Riots started to dominate keeping Hucknall to single figures in 8 of the next 10 games and already had a lead of 158 only 10 off the handicap they needed to trawl back. In the penultimate match Andy King put up a great fight against Simon Chatterton, Simon eventually won (21-13, 21-14).

This result gave Riots a 5 points lead (taking the handicap in to consideration) and this would mean Dick Johnson would have to beat Kerry Harvey to win the title, Dick put up a brave effort but Kerry was too good winning (21-10, 21-9) and sealed the first Shippam title with a 374-346 victory for the Ravenshead Riots after losing in the Semi-Finals the previous 2 years.

The game was played in good spirit by both teams and it also attracted a crowd which was great to see on the night. Well done to Matt Fowkes (Capt.), Kerry Harvey, Simon Chatterton & Andy Thorley on your Shippam title.
