Week 23 Shippam Cup

There will be a new winner of the Shippam Shield this year as in a repeat of last year’s Semi-Final Zygabyte A played Ravenshead Riots, however this year the result was reversed and the 3 times winners and current holders Zygabyte A were knocked out.

It was a fantastic display of table tennis by both sets of players and with the Shippam Shield being a Handicap Team event were every point counts it made for a close fought match. With the Handicap of 70 applied going into the last match Zygabyte A had a 6 point lead and looked odds on to once again make the final. However Kerry Harvey for the Riots was on top form and beat Zygabyte A Captain Joe Zygadlo 21-11, 21-12 to take the match by 13 points.

The other Semi-Final was an all Division 2 affair with Hucknall 50+ taking on the Spin Doctors,  Spin Doctors had an Handicap of 150 start, again this went down to the last match where the Spin Doctors had a 12 point lead going into the last match and had to just avoid an heavy defeat, however this is what happened when Andy King for Hucknall beat Graham Stent for the Spin Doctors quite convincingly 21-6, 21-4 to reverse the deficit and put his team in the final with a 20 point victory.

The Final will be played week commencing 18th April 2016.

Other league matters were resolved this week also after Zygabyte A and Snipers of St Josephs both won their respective Division & Divisional Cup league double, the second placed spots were still up for grabs.

Division 1 Jacksdale B beat Zygabyte B 8-2; Jacksdale needed just 6 points to guarantee the Runners Up spot and Duly delivered.

Division 1 Divisional Cup Ravenshead Riots had a straight shoot out with Jacksdale C winner takes the Runner Up, and it was Riots who came away convincing winners 9-1 to take the second spot

Division 2 Hucknall 50+ had to beat Spin Doctors by 9-1 or 10-0 to take the Runners Up spot, but they could only manage a 6-4 victory which in turn handed Ravenshead Angel’s second place and promotion to Division 1.

Division 2 Divisional Cup River Maun where sat in second but the 2 teams that could overtake them still had to play each other in the last match, Ravenshead Angels & Boothys Ravens. They sat 7 and 8 points respectively behind River Maun, so either team needed a big win but the result was a 5-4 victory to Ravens, which meant River Maun held on the Runners Up spot. This is a great achievement for River Maun who was playing their first season in the Mansfield League acquitted themselves well on all fronts and finish the season with a trophy.
