Autumn Cup 2016
The Annual Curtain Raiser on the Mansfield & District Table Tennis League the Autumn Cup took place on Monday 19th September at Ravenshead Leisure Centre. With a turnout of 24 this was the ideal number to be manageable to play the tournament on the night in a reasonable time.
The 6 times winner and the winner for the past 3 years Dean Brookes couldn’t participate due to injury left the tournament wide open with a new name to be crowned the Autumn Cup Champion.
Each group had 6 players who played each other in 2 games to 11, with a point for each game won.
In Group 1, Gareth Godber won all his games as expected and won the group with 10 wins out of 10, but surprisingly 2nd seed Pete Hodgson came bottom with only 2 points and it was newcomer to the Mansfield League Glen Cutmore who claimed 2nd place with 7 points.
In Group 2, This group went to form with seed 1 Joe Zygadlo winning all his games, and 2nd seed Matt fowkes winning 6 and coming second, however Tony Swain who won 5 will be kicking himself after a great chance to take 2nd place
In Group 3 , Top Seed Kerry Harvey like in the previous groups won all her games and 10 points, but the battle for 2nd place between Lisa Lewis & Kev Cope was very close, both winning 7 games it went down to point difference which Lisa won with +22 vs Kev’s +17
In Group 4, The top 2 Simon Chatterton & Dave Hodgkin ran away with this group drawing 1-1 with each other and won all their others 2-0 to both claim 9 points, Simon by just 4 points qualified as winner and Dave in 2nd, Roy Drew at 85 years old was a credit coming 3rd with 6 points.
The QF saw the top 4 seeded players progress to the semi finals, 3 of them 2-0 victories, only Matt Fowkes caused his team mate Simon Chatterton in the league an issue levelling up to 1-1, but Simon won the decider 11-8.
In the Semi-Finals Gareth Godber beat Simon Chatterton 2-0, but the other semi-final between Joe Zygadlo and Kerry Harvey was much closer, Joe took the 1st 11-5, Kerry responded with an 11-8 victory, Kerry carried on with her momentum and beat Joe 11-5 in the 3rd.
The Final was in the end as expected between Gareth & Kerry, and Gareth in 2 great games of table tennis finally saw off Kerry with a 2-0 win ( 11-8, 11-9 )
