Brookes takes Autumn Cup once Again
Dean Brookes took his 8th Autumn Cup title the annual curtain raiser on the Mansfield & District Table Tennis Season, places had to be limited to 24 with more demand on this very popular tournament.
Dean Brookes may have won, but he was taken all the way in Semi’s and the Final and shows the strength in Mansfield is improving year on year.
The tournament started with 4 groups of 6 with each playing in a round robin format of 2 games per match and a point for each game won. Although there were some surprises and great performances the top 2 seeds from each group progressed.
The top 4 seeds all won their groups with maximum 10 points – Dean Brookes, Joe Zygadlo, Kalpesh Bhatt & Jack Kirkland, the players who qualified in 2nd were Nathan Hollingworth, Pete Eyre, Mark Sansom & Erlands Skels.
3 of the Quarter-Finals went to plan with Joe, Dean & Jack all winning matches 2-0 vs Erlands, Mark & Pete respectively. However in the other Quarter, Nathan who played in Division 2 last year beat the very experienced Kalpesh (11-4, 11-4).
Nathan then continued his Giant Killing Spree beating Joe in the Semi-Final (4-11, 11-8, 11-9), in the other Jack took Dean all the way in a cracking display of attacking table tennis, each game went to the wire with Dean just coming through (11-9, 10-12, 11-9)
In the Final Nathan beat Dean 13-11 in the first game, and all the players who stayed to watch the final thought Nathan in only his 2nd season in the Mansfield League could cause the biggest upset, however canny player Dean pulled on his experience and took the title for the 8th time winning the next 2 games 11-4, 11-5.
