Inter Town 2nd Team

In Newbury's first match against Maidenhead, Steve Murgatroyd opened up the scoring with a 3-2 victory over left handed attacker Ricky Hardcastle. After letting slip a 2-1, 10-6 lead, Steve did well to knuckle down to win the deciding set.

Next on was Duncan Groves who set a blistering pace winning the first set against Eric Van Looy 11-3. The second set was much tighter but Duncan held set points at 10-8 and 11-10 only to lose out 15-13. The third and fourth sets were shared setting up a tense final set, Eric edging it 11-9.

Highly ranked cadet, Leo Long, then played Chris Collins running out a comfortable 3-0 winner. Steve took on Eric next but couldn't find his best form and lost out in four sets. At 2-2 the match could have gone either way but Leo stepped up to the mark with a brilliant 3-0 thrashing of Ricky. Duncan then claimed the point with a straight set victory over Chris.

Next up was Bracknell and Steve got Newbury off to a great start with a comfortable win over Jim Spencer. Duncan then defeated Daryl Griffith in three close sets and Leo made it 3-0 by beating Wendy Porter.

The point was sealed by Steve with a 3-1 sets win over Daryl and Leo and Duncan made it 6-0 with straight set wins over Jim and Wendy respectively.

With Reading having beaten both Maidenhead and Bracknell, the scene was set for a final showdown. Reading raced ahead with Bradley King finally overpowering Steve in four sets and Lisa Williams edging a five set thriller against Leo.

The third match proved critical and Duncan won a tense five set encounter against Danny Ricks to put Newbury on the board. The match still hung in the balance as Leo played out a sensational match against Bradley. Using his serve and third ball attack to great effect, Leo edged ahead in the decisive set and squeezed over the line to make it 2-2 in the match score.

Steve was up next against Danny, finally finding his fluent backhand attacking play to pull clear and take the match 3-0. This left Newbury 3-2 ahead but with sets and points to be counted back in the event of a 3-3 draw, Duncan needed a win against Lisa to make sure of winning the Division 2 Senior competition. The first three sets were very tight affairs, Lisa winning the first and Duncan the next two, coming from behind to do so. The fourth set was a different story as Duncan raced to an 8-1 lead. Though Lisa fought back bravely, Duncan won the set 11-7 and Newbury were home and dry.
