SECRETARY’S REPORT – SEASON 2020-21

What a disappointing year!

Devastated by COVID – Although we did manage to get 7 sessions in during October 2020 and currently 12 sessions throughout May and June 2021.  No League competitions or Club competitions.

Understandably, attendances at all sessions have dropped following the pandemic. A financial loss was inevitable and unfortunately it has been necessary to increase session fees.

Hopefully things will pick up now, with the majority of club members vaccinated, although it has been necessary to cancel the Saturday morning session during July and August due to lack of numbers.

We currently have over 100 players on our attendance register, over half representing our club in the local league, with up to 15 regular visitors playing for other clubs in the league, but practising with us. The remaining players being youngsters and older folk new to the game, some players returning to the game and many just looking for an active, social evening.  All are openly encouraged to join us.

Members are all kept up to date with news, events and results on our website and can also catch up with news as it happens on our Facebook page. Our monthly newsletter has been dropped during COVID and will probably not reappear as Facebook now has a similar role.

Many changes are afoot with Table Tennis England again interfering. ClubSpark (which we trialled with TTE briefly as it was no good) has been dumped and a new Club website (TT Clubs) managed by TTE is being developed, all aimed at phasing TT365 out of the picture.  As our current website is TT365 it looks likely that this may have to be changed in the not too distant future. Obviously everyone will be kept in touch with developments over the next few months.

I am hoping to organise some club tournaments (Albany Florists Cup, Don Blatchford Junior, and Singles Shield) likely to take place in September2021

The local South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League has not yet informed clubs about a return to league action but it is anticipated that the 2021-22 league season will restart in October 2021 probably in the same format but possibly dropping the doubles.  We will shortly have to start thinking about NATTC teams for what I am sure will be a reduced number of divisions, clubs and teams.

Newton Abbot Table Tennis Club is now well established as an important centre for table tennis in the area.  If you have any comments, ideas, proposals etc. to further improve your experience at your club please share them.

We obviously face difficult times ahead as we attempt to move back on to the table and close to normality and this will require support, patience and a great deal of effort, so please support and help get us back on our feet.
