2018-19 Week 8 Round Up by David Sillifant

TORRIDGE remain unbeaten in Division One of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League after beating Budehaven B 8-2 at North Tamerton Village Hall on Wednesday night.

Despite missing the injured Steve Cragg, David Streak and Peter Freeburn were in excellent form to win three, although both men were pushed close by Ashley Taylor.

Taylor and David Sillifant beat Jill Knightley to earn a couple of consolation points.

With second-placed North Hill A’s clash with Budehaven A postponed, champions Helland A recorded a 10-0 victory at bottom side Crackington B with Ingus Abolnieks, Mike Fisher and Ritchie Bartlett all improving their averages.

Across the hall, Crackington A and Whitstone Wanderers played out a thrilling 5-5 draw which saw all but two of the matches go to at least four ends and the home side win the final two matches to restore parity.

As usual, Frank Barnes was the standout for the home side in winning all three, while Judith Cook and Ross Wilmshurst survived deciders with Nathan Jukes.

Barry Stearman and Doug Genini were both in battling mood as they both got the better of Cook and Wilmshurst.

In Division Two, all three matches took place at Budehaven with their C, D and E teams all victorious.

Leaders Budehaven D thrashed Launceston 8-2, with Tim Orchard and Sam Jennings in outstanding form, while Robin Worden provided solid support in winning two.

Stephen Parsons beat Worden in four ends in the final match of the night to make the scoreline more respectable.

Budehaven C gained a point in the race for the title as they won 9-1 against Bridgerule A, although the visitors will be left wondering how it wasn’t closer.

Four of the matches went to five ends with the home side winning on each occasion.

Alan Quilter beat Chris Mill for the visitors’ point with Gary Bickle and Anthony Ward unbeaten on the night.

Budehaven E are now off the bottom after thrashing Crackington C 8-2.

Although Ian Westaway and Ian Edwards each won three singles and combined to be successful in the doubles, the highlight of the night was Ezra Jukes picking up his first ever victory in Division Two after beating Simon Patterson in a decider.

James Ellis and Trevor Dean were Crackington’s point scorers.

The clash between Altarnun A and North Hill B was postponed.

In Division Three, leaders North Hill C continue to dominate the division as they hammered Budehaven F 5-0 without dropping a game while Bridgerule B enjoyed an excellent 4-1 victory at Budehaven G, with Marcus Dymond unbeaten on the night in the singles and doubles.

Raymond Bewes grabbed their other point, with Luka Talajic-Sims replying for the home side.
