2017-18 WEEK 18 ROUND UP BY DAVID SILLIFANT

NORTH Hill A just about remain in the title picture in Division One
of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League after an impressive 7-3
victory at Budehaven A last Thursday.
The village club have played just five of their ten league fixtures,
but despite being 24 points behind leaders Helland A, they have two
games in-hand and still have to face each other.
Last Thursday they beat third-placed Budehaven thanks to an impressive
all-round performance, which included a perfect evening for Bob
Thompson, who won all three of his outings.
Martin Hynes and Shirley Luckhurst also did well to win two apiece,
although home skipper Dave Salisbury beat them both as well as winning
the doubles alongside Dave Ewen.
Despite the scoreline, many games were particularly close, although it
was the visitors who held their nerve.
Both sides are in action this week as Budehaven travel to the league
leaders and North Hill entertain an improving Crackington A side,
although the hosts know they’ll need a big victory and hope that
Helland slip up.
Crackington went close to beating second-placed Torridge at the
Crackington Institute, but were edged out 6-4.
David Streak maintained his 100% winning record for the visitors while
Dave Stone picked up two victories, although all three of his
encounters went the distance. Bob Montague also beat Judith Cook, who
managed a victory in the doubles with Frank Barnes.
Barnes got the better of Stone and Montague with home captain Ross
Wilmshurst beating the latter.
It was also an excellent week for Crackington B as they picked up 13
points from a possible 20 to move up to second.
They became the first team to leave Whitstone Wanderers without
tasting defeat as they drew 5-5 and then thrashed Altarnun 8-2 three
days later.
The cornerstone to their success was Ross Paynter, who won all six of
his singles matches, including beating two of the league’s best
players in Barry Stearman and Paul Burden. At Whitstone, Keiron
Chatterjea and Robin Evans picked up a win apiece but lost to both
Stearman and Doug Genini, who also won the doubles together.
Sunday’s outing was a much easier affair with Chatterjea and Evans
making it three victories from six for the week while Paul Burden
grabbed Altarnun’s points.
That summed up a poor week for Altarnun as they lost 6-4 to Budehaven
C on Thursday night.
Burden earned half of their score in the singles as well as winning
the doubles with Geoff Hale. Simon Holmes beat Chris Mill for their
fourth point.
For Budehaven, Anthony Ward took his record to 30 wins from 36 for the
campaign with three victories, while Andrew Ward was solid in securing
two points to go alongside Mill’s win over Hale.
As a result of those games, Crackington B are one point ahead of
Budehaven C having played the same amount of fixtures. Whitstone are
eight points back but have three matches in-hand.
The other game in the division saw league leaders Budehaven B warm up
for tonight’s clash with their C team by increasing their advantage
at the top to 28 points after a 10-0 win at Launceston. The visiting
trio of Ashley Taylor, David Sillifant and Owen Salisbury were in good
form; dropping just three games all night.
Budehaven E require just four points from their final three fixtures
to win the Division Three title.
Their 5-0 win at Helland C, coupled with Crackington C dropping
points, means that Budehaven are seven points ahead.
However with them having three games to play and Crackington just two,
four points will be enough.
Despite falling further behind, it was another good week for
Crackington as they beat North Hill C 4-1 on Thursday and Helland B by
the same scoreline on Sunday. Simon Patterson won all four of his
singles across the two matches.
The closest match in the division last week came at Bridgerule Village
Hall on Friday night as the home side’s B team beat Budehaven F, 3-2.
Both Ezra Jukes and uncle Andrew lost to Nick Brewer but beat Audrey
Bewes to set up a decider in the doubles.
However, Brewer and Bewes held their nerve to win it in four games and
continue their quest for a top-three finish.
