2018-19 Week 3 Round Up by David Sillifant
JUST a point separates Torridge and North Hill A at the top of Division One after three rounds of matches while champions Helland suffered their second consecutive defeat at home to Budehaven A.
Torridge won all ten matches at home to Crackington B without dropping an end, while North Hill, who beat Helland 7-3 in their previous outing, were 10-0 victors at Crackington A, although they had to survive some close shaves, including Bob Thompson fighting from 2-0 down to beat Frank Barnes.
The result of the week took place at Helland as Budehaven A, who were boosted by a rare appearance from Keith Bradshaw, picked up their first win of the season with a 7-3 success.
Bradshaw won all three in straight games while he combined with David Ewen to win the doubles in four ends. Ewen won a couple of deciders with their other point coming from Dave Salisbury.
For the home side, who were without star player Ritchie Bartlett, their points came from Ingus Abolnieks (2) and Allan Brookes.
The clash between last year’s top two in the second division went the way of Budehaven B as they beat Whitstone Wanderers 6-4 at Budehaven Sports Hall.
Ashley Taylor was in excellent form all night to win all three of his singles with David Sillifant (2) providing solid support.
Nathan Jukes earned two points for Whitstone with Doug Genini and Barry Stearman also contributing.
In Division Two, Budehaven D made it three wins from three with a 7-3 victory at North Hill B.
Sam Jennings was in excellent form to win all three singles including fighting back to beat Adrian Davis, who won two himself.
Trevor Luckhurst defeated Tim Orchard after being two-games down to earn their other point while Robin Worden was victorious in two thrillers early on in the evening as well as in the doubles with Jennings.
Budehaven C are up to second after beating Budehaven E 7-3.
Ian Westaway clinched both of the E team’s points in the singles as well as combining to win the doubles with Ian Edwards. But it wasn’t enough as Anthony Ward won all three with Andrew Ward and Gary Bickle victorious in two.
Crackington C won 6-4 at Altarnun A. Zach Parker kept up his 100% record, including beating Paul Burden, while Simon Patterson also did well to win two singles, one of which saw him defeat Geoff Hale from two sets down.
Burden (2), Hale and Alex Whitfield earned Altarnun’s points.
Bridgerule A are the only other unbeaten team besides Budehaven D after clinching their second 6-4 victory in a row.
The opening match of the night was the longest of the season with Karen Horrell beating Mick Menzies 20-18 in the fifth.
Menzies won the rest of his outings including the doubles with Alan Quilter, who was unbeaten all evening.
For the home side, Horrell won two with David Hughes and Lois Atkin also contributing.
North Hill C maintained their great start in Division Three with two away victories.
They won 4-1 Altarnun B on Tuesday night before winning 3-2 at Budehaven F on Thursday.
