Week 5 Report

Week 5 report  - w/b 23 October

Match of the week in Division 1 was the 5-5 draw between Balls of Fury and Misfits.

The key match was between Wim Faassen and Daniel Moore, which was settled in the fifth set in Wim's favour. He went on to win his other games to record a good triple, while Daniel won his other games. There was a welcome return to form from Marcus Berry with two wins. The top v bottom clash went according to form with Torrington A recording a 9-1 win over Chulmleigh A. Triple wins were made by Kevin Taylor and Chris Thompson, while Chulmleigh's Jon Taylor fought hard for his team's point.

In the other match, Smugglers posted a strong 8-2 win over Nets and Edges. Matthew  Thomas was star performer with a good triple, assisted by Peter Hedge and Terry Wright – each with two wins. Martin Eyles put up a good fight for Nets and Edges with two hard fought victories. The match saw a number of nerve-shredding long games.

In Division 2, West Buckland continue to perform well. This week, a really good draw  against Holsworthy A was forged by Rob Baker whose unbeaten evening included victory over Dave Salisbury. Dave scored two himself as did Alan Briggs for the home team.

Simply Smashing for once forgot their team name, and were beaten 7-3 by Paddlers. Tim Cooke showed a welcome return to form with an unbeaten evening, and he was ably supported by a triple from Rob Gale.

Malc Overson continues to be the main scorer for Despicables, this week grabbing two against Littleham. Mike Bellew was very much back to winning ways with his three in an 8-2 victory. The same score was the reward for Holsworthy C against Dolphins. Doug Genini has presumably got his new bat sorted out as he was unbeaten. Dave Harman won the Dolphin's points. Sumiyo Berkeley and Alan Quilter  are both improving rapidly, with two wins apiece.

The final two matches look to have been one-sided affairs. Chulmleigh B need the points to make ground on the leaders and duly obliged with a 9-1 win over the Vice. Harry Collins and Shaun Clarke both won all three, with Bob Taylor the only resistance on the night. A number of games went to deuce, so it was not all plain-sailing. League leaders Holswothy B were in no mood to let anything slip, as David Streak and Jill Knightly were unbeaten against a two-man Chulmleigh Chiefs side. Trevor Reynolds did well to hold his nerve in an 11-9 win in the fifth game for the Chiefs solitary point.
