Week 9 Report 2018-19

Week 9 report  - 26 November 2018

Misfits and Smugglers remain close in league 1, though Misfits have the crucial game in hand. All this, despite playing this week with only two players. Martyn Beer and Peter Kneil won their matches with only the odd dropped game, and a doubles win gave them a 7-3 result.

Lee Farrant picked up Balls of Fury's consolation point against a rampant Smugglers, for whom Martin Babulik and Matthew Thomas scored triple wins. Lee and Martin had a cracking encounter settled at deuce in the fifth.

Holsworthy A had a 7-3 win over Herons. Dave Salisbury kindly sent in a report. 'Steve Cragg got his three,  although Robin Gale did well to take a game off him.  The highlight was BillTregellas's thriller against Owen Salisbury, saving a match point in the fourth game, and bringing his greater experience to bear to just edge out the youngster in a close fifth game. Dave, and yes I am biased, was desperately unlucky to come from behind in the second, third and fourth games to get back to 10-9 against Robin, but lose the next crucial point to nets, edges and God knows what else. Final mention for Owen, because Mike and Robin insisted, for his sportsmanship when Robin got the finest edge in a crucial point, but Owen was the only one who saw and heard it and said so, despite Mike, as the umpire, insisting it did not touch. I taught him well !!!!'

Nets and Edges fought hard to produce a draw against McD's and Co.. Ben Taylor won all three for the McD's, supported by two from James Raymont. Martin Eyles won two for the home team but it took a late evening effort to win the last two singles and then the  doubles to ensure the 5-5  result. Throughout the evening there were plenty of close games.

Spin Doctors may have started the season slowly but they are going well now. Kevin Davies won Chulmleigh A's sole point against the trio of Messrs Sussex, Morgan and Ewen. Dave Morgan had a long night with all his games going to five.

In division 2, heartiest congratulations to Sue Jackson! She won her first match in the league in Despicables 8-2 win over Dolphins. Not only that, but having waited an eternity for the first win, the second came in the same evening. Isn't that the way! Bet there were celebrations in that household!  Malc Overson and Richard Nicholls won all their games to give them a fine result.

Elsewhere, Paddlers had a good win over Holsworthy C. Tim Cooke led by example winning his three with good support from the rapidly improving Tom Venn.

League leaders Holsworthy D cemented their position in a 9-1 destruction of The Vice. Messrs Taylor Jukes and Sillifant won all their singles dropping only one game in the process. The Vice won a consolation with a closely fought doubles victory.

Finally, Littleham had a great result at Top Spin Tail Spinners. Dave Stone was player of the match with three wins over strong opposition. Alan Pomeroy picked up two points – one a very tight game against Jai Moore. Alan Briggs picked up two of TSTPs points.
