Week 1 Report - 2019-20

Week one report – 5 October 2019

Result of the week has to be the 9-1 win of newly promoted Holsworthy D at Chulmleigh. Ashley Taylor and Dave Silifant both won all three – an amazing performance. Ian Rice chipped in well with a double. The only resistance came from Jon Taylor's single win. The doubles ended 11-9 in the fifth in favour of the Holsworthy team.

Elsewhere in division 1 Misfits were held to a 5-5 draw by Balls of Fury. Martyn Beer starred for Misfits winning all his games, but a spirited response from Wim Faassen and Lee Farrant – each with two wins – and a doubles victory ensured a shared result.

Blazing Paddles had a winning start to the season, seeing off the Herons 7-3. Ben and Kevin Taylor held their paddles aloft to record three points each. Kevin was pushed all the way by Rob Herman, however. Who won the first two games on deuce, Herons players each picked up a point to begin their season.

Smugglers and Spin Doctors had a pretty close match as would be expected. Michael Sussex gave the Doctors a healthy score, unbeaten all evening. Dave Morgan backed up with a point and was close in other games. Matthew Thomas and Martin Babulik, each with two, led the Smugglers to a 6-4 win. It was nearly a drawn game as Dave Ewen lost a really tight encounter with Peter Hedge 10 -12 in the fifth!

Paddlers set out their stall for the season, with a commendable 7-3 win over a Littleham team who will themselves be up amongst the leaders. The trio of Sam Coutu-Oughton, Dave Sweeney and Joe Percival each won two games, and the doubles win sealed a fine victory.

Despicables are missing Malc Overson, who has decided, sadly, to hang his bat up after many continuous years playing. His opponents will not miss his backhand! Lindsey Wright and I had a great season as Minions with Malc as star and coach, making sure we kept focussed. His presence on the table tennis circuit will be missed. Despicables have moved in the transfer market and brought in Mike Hill who rewarded his new colleagues with 3 wins against Holsworthy C. Richard Nicholls added two, while both Sue Jackson and Sumiyo Berkeley got their season off to a good start with a point each. Bob Montague proved he is still a force to be reckoned with picking up two wins for Holsworthy. Final score – Despicables 6 Holsworthy C 4.

Dolphins went to Chulmleigh, but came up against a determined chiefs team. Joey Butt top-scored with three, while Andrew Suliauskas and Trevor Reynolds both won two matches. The Chiefs may be pushing for the title this year! Dolphins' consolation points in an 8 – 2 defeat came courtesy of Chris Isaac and Derek Preston, who just lost to Joey Butt in a five set game.

Matches between Holsworthy A and Bridgerule in Division 1 and Holsworth B and West Buckland in Division 2 postponed
