Bardsley run ended in last 16

Charlotte Bardsley’s run at the European Youth Championships came to an end in the last 16 of the Junior Girls’ Singles today.

The 17-year-old had beaten two seeded players in previous rounds but found the 12th seed Ema Labosova a bridge too far.

Bardsley took the first game, but her Slovakian opponent hit back to take the next four to seal a quarter-final place.

The defeat ended English involvement at the event in Ostrava, Czech Republic, with four athletes who were still in the consolation events having to withdraw to hand their opponents walkovers. Denise Payet was the only one able to play, winning her last 16 tie and going through the quarter-finals on a walkover, before having to concede her semi-final to a Swedish opponent.
