Week 4 Report 2019-20

Week 4 report 25/10/2019

Blazing Paddles, Smugglers and Bridgerule are vying for top spot in division 1 – just 2  points separating them. Bridgerule however have a game in hand on the other two teams.  At the other end of the table, it is looking to be a tough season for Chulmleigh A. In division 2 Paddlers are in high spirits with four wins out of four, while Dolphins and Holsworthy C - tied on 7 points - will be seeking to avoid the bottom spot.

Smugglers gave Chulmleigh A a difficult evening. Matthew Thomas and Peter Hedge  both won all their games to produce an 8-2 win. Harry Collins and Kevin Davies picked up the Chulmleigh team's consolation points.

Blazing Paddles kept their position at the top of the table with a 6-4 win over Holsworthy A. Kevin Taylor led the way with 3 wins, supported by Captain Tim Cooke's double. Mark Beaumont (2 wins) put in a strong performance for the visitors, who won a fiercely contested doubles.

Bridgerule kept up the pressure on the others, beating Herons 8-2. Dave Streak and Steve Cragg were in imperious form and were largely untroubled. Helen Murgatroyd had a long evening – all her games went to five, with her winning one. Rob Herman and James Raymont picked up the Herons points.

Misfits certainly will not be out of the picture. Michael Sussex was in great form for Spin Doctors, gaining three of his sides four points, but the trio of Keith le Milliere, Peter Kneil and Martyn Beer had two wins each in a 6-4 win. It could have been different! Misfits won every contest that went to 5 games – the stuff of champions!

Newly promoted Holsworthy D are beginning to find life a bit tougher now. Balls of Fury – with Lee Farrant in fine fettle and three wins – gave them an 8-2 lesson. Tim Strand and Steve Porter had two wins each, as did Dave Sillifant for the Holsworthy team.

In division 2, Paddlers cemented their position with a 10-0 demolition of Holsworthy C. The Paddlers trio of Joe Percival, Sam Coutu-Oughton and Dave Sweeney didn't have it all their own way, but had the knack of winning the tight games. They remain 4 points clear of Littleham.

Joey Butt of Chulmleigh Chiefs very much led the resistance at Littleham. He won his three against tough opponents. Dave Stone (whose game against Joey Butt was very close!), Mike Bellew, and Alan Pomeroy picked up everything else for the home team.

West Buckland fought well to get a draw at Despicables. Mike Ware was the star for the visitors, winning his three, while Oliver Sussex and Jason Prouse picked up a point apiece. Mike Hill and Richard Nicholls each won two singles, and together earned the draw in the doubles.

Finally, Dolphins resistance against Holsworthy B was largely in the hands of Mike Fawcett with two good wins. The visitors 7 – 3 victory came courtesy of a strong performance from Barry Stearman (3 wins), with able support from Jeremy Rickman's double.
