SUCCESS AT WESTERN MASTERS FOR TWO LOCAL PLAYERS

Both Sue Felstead and Jimmy Walsh have been playing locally in the North Herts Table Tennis League for many years.

Both players entered the Western Masters on the weekend of 21st/22nd April which was a very strong competition with players travelling to compete from all over England (as well as Sweden)

In the Over 70`s Sue was the number 4 seed and won 4 matches including beating
Eileen Shaler (2 seed) which was a great accomplishment as Sue had lost to her the last time they played each other.
Unfortunately Sue lost in final to Janet Hodgetts but was very pleased with her performance managing to get to the final.
Sue didn’t stop there as she in the over 60`s  Consolation singles she won 3 matches losing in final to Marjorie Dawson of Essex.

Jimmy played in the over 40’s, 50’s and over 40 mixed doubles. The strength in depth in all 3 competitions was fierce.

In the over 40’s Jimmy won his group comfortably and lost out in the last 16 in an all attacking match against Phil Cox – there was nothing in it and Jimmy ended up losing 12-10 in the 5th leg.

Jimmy was the number 8 seed in the over 50’s and after recovering from a hamstring injury did not feel too confident of how far he would go. Again Jimmy sailed through his group. In the quarter finals and semi finals Jimmy managed not to drop a set against 2 very strong players John  Payne and Nigel Eckersly (former England player) Final time for Jimmy and it was going to be tough against Darren Griffin who Jimmy has never beaten before – that was soon to end as Jimmy had a battle with Darren and came through the winner beating him 11-9 in the 5th. Jimmy ended up winning the over 50 event and was very proud to hold the title of over 50s Western Masters Champion. Jimmy also got to the final of the over 40’s mixed doubles event. “It was a long weekend and I played lots of matches. It was my first event back since my hamstring injury 4 weeks ago. I am thrilled to win the over 50’s – it was a strong line up and a tough competition to win”
