League Update 15th January
Newton and Seaburn Dene, who were both relegated from the Premier Division last season, both fielded weakened teams when they faced up to each other in a rearranged first division match. However Anthony Ainley and John Rusell made sure that Newton increased their lead at the top of table being unbeaten in the singles and also defeating Ken Bowman and Rod Roberts in the doubles to run out 7 – 2 winners. The two points that the Dene got were just enough to take them into second place, one point above North Fire B.
North East Chinese Association C moved into second spot in the third division when they visited NESLC Codgers, winning 9 – 1. Terry Kwong and Chun Yin Yu won all of their matches with Kit Robinson getting a couple. Rusell Roper won the only set for the home team, beating Robinson. However, Pauline Long made the visitors fight hard for their victory going to five ends with both Kwong and Robinson. She also got the second game in her match with Yu but, as expected, he then took command to win the next two 11 –2  11 – 5.
The defeat leaves the Codgers in the relegation places.
The draw for the third round of the Handicap Cup sees the two remaining Premier Division sides, Byker and Riding Mill drawn against each other. The full draw is as follows:
O.E. FATTS v Matfen C, Brandon v Saints, YMCA N.Tyneside C v W.Chapel, Newton B v Ouston B, Byker v Riding Mill, Spartans v NECA B, Corinthians v Swifts, Newton A v Ouston A.
