The new table tennis season is underway, and we are 2 weeks
into the new season. This year there are 3 divisions as opposed to the 2
divisions we had last year. Thanks to the call for new teams in the Evening News earlier this year we have
welcomed 2 new teams to the league – Griff & Coton and Weddington Sports,
who both have a new team in Division 3.

Division 1

Last year’s champions, Ambleside Experts, have started in
the same fashion as they finished the league last season, with 2 good results,
beating Ajax Wolvey D 10-0, and beating the Div 2 champions, NALGO Mira 9-1
with Lee Bennett, guesting up from Div 2, making a maximum, as did last year’s
town champion, Jess Birbeck. Stockingford C are in 2nd spot, 3
points behind Ambleside following a close win over NALGO Queens 6-4, with Ian
Baxter  of NALGO providing the main
opposition making a maximum. Stockingford C then whitewashed their sister team,
Stockingford A 10-0, who were promoted from Division 2 this year, and are
finding life a little difficult and are presently at the bottom of the league
on 3 points. NALGO Queens are in 3rd place, having lost their first
game, they then went on to beat Stockingford B 8-2, with Ian Baxter again
making a maximum, which left Stockingford B 2nd from bottom just
above their sister team.  Just 1 point
behind NALGO Queens is Ajax Wolvey C who started well with a 7-3 win against
Stockingford B, but then lost 6-4 to their D team thanks to a maximum from Derek
Thompson. The D side are in 6th spot on 6 points, just 2 behind
NALGO Mira in 5th position.

Division 2

Early leaders here are Ambleside Heroes, who were relegated
from Division 1 last year, and have won both their opening matches, beating
Wolvey B 9-1, and their sister team Ambleside Amateurs 7-3 with Lee Bennett making
a maximum in both matches. They are 4 points ahead of Ambleside F in second
spot, who opened by beating Ambleside A
7-3, but then having a close match against Fire Brigade where honours
were shared in a 5-5- draw. Gareth Edmunds of Fire made a maximum, and it looks
like it will be interesting to see who comes out top of the averages this year.
The players from Crescent will be looking at this title as well as the
divisional champions, and they started out in fine style with a 10-0 whitewash
of a weakened Fire Brigade side, which with only 1 match played leaves them in
3rd position in the league. Wolvey B share the same points as
Crescent on 10 points but they have played two matches having lost their
opening fixture 9-1, but then had exactly the same score in their next match,
but this was in their favour as they beat their sister team Wolvey F – Brian Spalding
and Jackie Flavell making a maximum. Having only played one match this leaves
Wolvey F at the bottom of the league, with Fire Brigade above them and
Ambleside A just above Fire by 1 point.

Division 3

This league is the smallest of the three leagues as 2 teams unfortunately
dropped out before the season got under way. Ambleside clubs lead the way with
the D side topping the league at the moment, although they have played 2
matches whereas the other 2 Ambleside teams have so far only played one match.
The D side opened the campaign with a 10-0 win over league newcomers Griff
& Coton, with William Peace man of the match. However, they then struggled
against Ambleside C who beat them 9-1, only managing to stop a whitewash by
winning the final doubles. This puts the C side in 3rd spot with the
Ambleside Rhinos just above them in 2nd spot on 10 points following
their win against the other league newcomers Weddington B, with Richard Costall
named as man of the match. Wolvey E have only played the 1 match so far but
this they won 8-2 over Weddington B with Julie Williscroft making a maximum,
and this places them in 4th spot. Weddington B and Griff & Coton
take up the two bottom spots in the league, which is not surprising as they are
new to the league, but they are enjoying themselves despite the defeats, and
can only get stronger as the season continues.
