OLDHAM and District Table Tennis League
Sunday 28 February, 59 of the Oldham TT League players arrived at Hulme Grammar Sports Hall to compete in the Oldham Closed Championships.
Junior Event
Juniors played in 2 groups with 1st and 2nd in each group progressing to Semi Final stage. They were Alex Darlington, Jacob Sharp, Sophie Newton and Dragomer Statev with Alex defeating Sophie in the Final
VETS over 40s
Again played in Groups with 1st and 2nd progressing to Knock out stage with Birley Moss’s Miles Benjamin defeating Hollinwood’s Barry Elliot in a cracking final 13-11,10-12,11-9,11-9.
Mixed Singles -12 Groups – then knock out stage
-Miles Benjamin who reached the semi-final stage, was defeated in his group by Jacob Reilly Cooper and only managed to finished top of the group by defeating Tommy Ryan 13-11 in 5th game. Dave Varney surprised his group by defeating Gary Newton and progressing to the knock out stage.
Three of our Junior players Alex Darlington, Josh Hudson and Sophie Newton all progressed beyond their Group stage
The semi-finalists were Darryl Meredith, Barry Elliott, Kyan Chan and Miles Benjamin with the eventual winner being Kyan Chan who defeated Barry Elliott with sparkling attacking skills.
Birley Moss players took both Singles and Vets 40’s trophys
Doubles Event
The two Simons, King and Walsh defeated last year’s runners up N Buckley and P king in a dazzling Quarter final 5 sets, but were defeated in the final by M Tubasun and A Jackson who had defeat B Elliott and I McLean in their semi final.
VETS Over 60s
Round Robin - between T Ryan, R Carter and S Meredith with Stewart winning.
Divisional’s Handicap
1st Division Matty Evans defeated Simon Hardwick in a 15 player knock out event.
