Week 27-2-17

It’s getting tense in the second division in the Oldham & District Table Tennis League. 1st played 3rd this week. Hollinwood B v Unison B battled it out, both trying to stake their claim for promotion. Unison B again going for youth with the average age being 19 with Andrew Tarpey, Jacob Reilly-Cooper and Sophie Newton. Could Sophie continue her heroics from the weeks prior? Of course, she could. Unison B claiming a strong and jaw dropping 9-1 victory with Sophie and Jacob claiming 3 each with the former taking the MOM award for the 3rd week in a row.

What could Honeywell C, the other promotion contender, do to make sure they kept the pace? A brilliant 3 from Lukasz Maciejewski and Tommy Ryan allowed Honeywell to walk away with a fantastic 9-1 victory of their own.

With the possibility of a tied 1st place on the cards, it is down to next weeks fixture of Hollinwood B v Honeywell C to shed some light into the final positions of the three teams. It’s been thrilling watching it happen all season. To and fro.

Elsewhere in Division 2, Hollinwood C played Coldhurst B, Coldhurst without their star, Harry Lewis this week. They sorely missed him as they succumbed to a 10-0 loss with David Jefferson taking home the MOM award, just getting it before Joe Redikin and Paul Hutchinson. Well done Hollinwood.

To Division 1 now where it is frighteningly close at the bottom. Uppermill A, Unison A and Rosehill all fighting to stay in the prestigious 1st Division.

Uppermill A first; they played 2nd place Birley Moss, with Birley Moss showing their class and why they occupy their position with a fantastic 9-1 victory. Miles Benjamin proving to be in excellent form a week before the Closed Championships with 3 and the MOM award. Kyan Chin claiming 3 more and Naz Ahmed picking up 2 whilst Mark Simpson claimed Uppermill’s point, which could prove vital in the coming weeks.

To Unison A now where they played Honeywell A. Gary Newton, Sophie’s father, showing her that class and skill truly does run in the family with a brilliant 3 and the MOM award, with Phil Myers and Simon Hardwick picking up 3 and 2 respectively in their 9-1 victory over Unison. Mike Brierley picking up Unison’s point.

Could Rosehill pick up more points to push themselves closer to safety? They faced Saddleworth B and it finished 5-5. Matthew Evans of Saddleworth claiming the MOM with his 3, Paul King picking up 2 and Duncan, saving himself for his new team, Saddleworth A this week with 0. Simon Collins claiming 2 for Rosehill, who also claimed the doubles to get 5 important points.

Duncan played got Saddleworth A and got the MOM award by winning 3 in their 9-1 victory over bottom of the league Werneth. They need results and fast if they are to stay up.

In Division 3, Unison D played Hollinwood D, with John Maher winning 2 along with Alex Darlington and the MOM Alex Darlington winning 3 for Unison in their 8-2 victory. Josh and Alex winning the doubles. They only need a handful more points to secure promotion to the 2nd Division.

Unison C weren’t as fortunate as they played top of the table, Deaf A and lost 7-3 with Dave Varney claiming the MOM for Deaf with his two with Smiler & Chris Hall winning 2 and the doubles for them.

Grotton B faced Owls A in the 4th, Grotton winning 7-3, Gary Owen and Neil Tomlinson winning 3 with the former winning the MOM award.

Owls B fared better, with their victory over Deaf C. John Tanner playing beautifully for his 3, Gerald Lennox and Andy Robinson winning 2 each for Owls.

In Division 5, the leaders, Unison F lost to Hollinwood G, with Paul Whyatt winning 3 and Gareth Hey, now a G team player for the remainder, winning 3 also. Unison F claiming the doubles to keep pushing for that promotion.
