Division 1

BIRLEY MOSS WIN CUP THRILLER

In a preliminary round match of the handicap cup, Birley Moss staged a remarkable come back to defeat Werneth A by 5 points. Trailing by 86 points at the start, they were still 48 points behind with just 3 sets remaining. Naz Ahmed then picked up 23 points and Miles Benjamin 21 leaving a 4 point deficit with just the doubles remaining. Mick Pellowe and Paul Wilkinson gained 1 point in the first three games for Werneth, winning 11-6, losing 10-12, 10-12 but leading by 5 points going into the final game. However Benjamin and Ahmed took the final game by an amazing 11-1 score to win the set by 9 points and the match by 5 points. Benjamin (+ 59) and Ahmed (+35) made key gains for the Moss.

In a rearranged match Hollinwood A and Unison A shared the points with a treble from Matt Shaw and doubles from Steve Collins and Jacob Reilly-Cooper for Unison the main contributors.

Division 3

Honeywell F beat Deaf B 6-4 to confirm 3rd place behind champions Deaf A and second placed Unison D who also had a win over Deaf B by 8-2. Honeywell F gained some revenge by beating Deaf A in the handicap cup thanks to a 64 point gain by Adam Rowbotham. Honeywell F started 32 points in front and extended that to 61.

Gilders and Honeywell E drew 5-5 with a treble from Abby Griffiths and a double from Bernard Davies keeping Honeywell E above the relegation places. Martin Nicholls replied with a double for Gilders.

Division 4

In a mid table clash, Unison E came away with an 8-2 win at Hollinwood E.

Division 5

The 5th Division title is still wide open with 3 teams in the race. Hollinwood G beat Coldhurst D 6-4 to go 2 points above Denshaw A and 3 points below leaders Unison F who have completed their fixtures. The one remaining fixture is between Denshaw A and Hollinwood G which will decide the final positions but whatever the score Unison F will be overtaken.

Andy Tyas +18, Dave Renton +11 and Dan Bretten +16 did the damage whilst Malcolm Wills recovered 36 for Coldhurst.
