JAMIE LIU RUNNER-UP IN SCHOOLS NATIONALS

ALSO chosen to represent Europe at World Hopes in Doha

Shiplake College’s top seeded Jamie Liu battled his way through 8 matches to the Under 13 Boys’ final of the Butterfly ESTTA Individual Championships, contested by 326 players (from all age groups) in Wolverhampton on Saturday, April 23rd.

In the quarter-finals Jamie went the distance against Louis Price (Avon), seeing his opponent come from 2-0 down before recovering to win 3-2 (11-6, 11-4, 11-13, 4-11, 11-5). It was a bit easier in the semis, when he overcame Freddie Osenton-Brown (Yorkshire) in straight games, but he was beaten in the final by Louis Moyes (Norfolk).

Reece Chamdal (Cooper School, Bicester) went out of the Under 16 Boys’ event at the stage of the last 16, taking a game off the eventual winner, Alex Ramsden (Northants).

Over Easter Jamie attended a Eurotalents Hopes selection camp in Luxemburg, competing with 16 other players from 10 countries for one of the three European boys’ nominations to join the total of 16 boys and 16 girls at the 2016 ITTF World Hopes week and challenge in Doha, Qatar at the end of May. They were put through their paces during a week of intensive training and competitions, with the help from Chinese sparring partners and lead coaches from the China Table Tennis College, including former Chinese national coach, Li Xiaodong and former World silver medallist in mixed doubles, Feng Zhe. Jamie came through this successfully and was one of the three boys chosen to represent Europe!
