After 4 weeks into the season

Four weeks into the new season and there have been one or two surprising results and some great performances.

Best of the bunch so far was the match in the Premier Division between Ball Green D’s team of Ben Knight, Paul Jennings and Paul Lord against visitors John O’Groarke, Alan Downward and Andy Booth from Bradwell C. Alan Downward was Player of the Match winning all his 3, but with Ball Green up 5-4 up at the end of the night, Ben Knight faced John O’Groarke. Ben lost the first 2 sets and won the next two, so we had a 5 set decider. It must have been one of the longest games in the League’s history when it finally ended at 26-28 to John, making the match a draw.

With the return of Shaun Slater to the Penkhull A team, they are going great guns and are currently second, behind Ball Green A on sets difference. Bradwell A and Ball Green B are now 1 point behind having drawn in a recent match and all these top 4 remain unbeaten.

The two Penkhull teams in Division 1 are also unbeaten with the B team leading by just 1 set. Ball Green E and Kidsgrove B have both lost once, with Fenton just behind. Ball Green E’s team of Tony Stanway Cyril Merriman and William had a great 10-0 win over their own G team, but next week travel meet Fenton and it should be an interesting match.

With only 10 teams in Division two it will be a few weeks before everyone is on an even keel. MESC E are currently top having won all their games and along with Kidsgrove F and Ball Green K have 6 points each, but the MESC C team to have a game in hand. 14 year old Lucas Clarke from the Kidsgrove F team is turning into a good player and was Player of the Match in their recent game against the Ball Green K team of Stephen Stirland, John Brooks and Kenneth Humphries, winning all his 3 matches in their 9-1 victory and it was only Stephen Stirland who managed to take one set away from him.
