Jacobaeus A upset the form book to edge out League champions Cohebe in a thrilling Final.
Cohebe fielding Manchester’s Kyan Chen Bolton’s Paul Brandwood and Billy Russell lost 5-3 to local lads John Porter Adam Linton and Jack Moody.
Jacobaeus started off well with John Porter beating Paul Brandwood in a repeat of the Veterans Final from the recent Preston Championships. Kyan Chen then beat Jack Moody in 3 straight sets to level 1 all.. Adam Linton took on Billy Russell in a niggly 4 setter Linton winning 12-10 in the 4th. 2-1 to Jacobaeus.
Cohebe then levelled the match when Brandwood , after losing the first set beat Jack Moody, 3-1 in a close match. John Porter then made it 3-2 for Jacobaeus beating the dogged Billy Russell. This was a hard game of nip and tuck, Porter winning 11-9 in the 5th set.
Back came Cohebe with Chen easily beating Linton 3-0 to level the scores. 3 all.
Next on Jack Moody and Billy Russell, Jack had never beaten Russell before and duly lost the first set. But kept his cool to edge out Russell 11-9 in the second. After this his confidence was high and he really got his attacking game going and Russell could do nothing to stop him, Moody taking the 3rd 4th sets 11-6 11-6 to put Jacobeaus up 4-3. Moody must be one of the most improved players of the season.
Cohebe were now feeling the pressure.
Next up, Linton and Brandwood, both hard hitters, and a fast serve and attack game ensued.
Linton taking the first set 11 -8 Brandwood the 2nd 12-10 Linton the 3rd 11-8, Brandwood won the 4th easily 11-5. 2 all . Both players playing well, but Linton got off to a good start in the 5th, and really went for it, with some big forehands and backhands to take the last set 11-8 and to give Jacobaeus a great win 5-3.
Well done to the Jacobaeus players, but also a big pat on the back to Jacobeaus’s coach Paul Grayham who’s tactics and motivation had a big say in this win. A team effort.
In the 1st Division Final, Deepdale Lyons B (the Divisional champions) proved too strong for Riverside B.
The team of Paul Penny Mike Dunn and Danny Johnson easily beat Jim Higham Denise Sirvinskas and Mark Gleave by 5-2.
Jim Higham played well for Riverside beating Danny Johnson 3-1 (and giving him 40 years, sorry Danny) but lost to Paul Penny 3-2.
Mark Gleave played well to beat Mike Dunn in 5 sets. But overall Deepdale Lyons dominated the match. Paul Penny was on good form for the Champions.
The Riverside Club however did taste victory when their F Team won the 2nd Division Cup 5-2 beating Croston A 5-2.
Croston with their team of Jim Maddren, Barry Jordan and Eric Harrison were slight favourites going into the final. Riverside fielded Geoff Tweedy, Kevin Park and Dave Chadwick.
Barry Jordan got Croston off to a good start beating Riverside’s no 1 Kevin Park.
But Riverside fought back with victories for Geoff Tweedy over Eric Harrison and Dave Chadwick over Jim Maddren. Tweedy then lost to the impressive Jordan to level the match.
Riverside then took the next 3 matches to secure the victory.
Park beating Maddren 3-2, Chadwick beating Harrison in 4 sets and Maddren losing to Chadwick 3-1.
The match was a credit to Division 2, played in good spirit, competitive, a good standard and enjoyed by all the players. Not bad when it’s a final and the average of the players was over 60?
