In Division One this week Masons Arms C came out the close victors over Phoenix B last week. Matt Bacon had the best evening with a hat-trick for Masons over Chris Cattell, Cliff Glaves and Eddie Fogg. The match went to the final set of the night with Bacon against Glaves, who put up the a strong battle with all three games going to deuce. Masons coming out 6-4 winners overall.
Division Two saw Clifton D taking on Scorpions C at Clifton. After six sets the honours were shared. Then Scorpions’ Alex Bland and Ade Truman took the doubles relatively easily but veteran Pete Horsfield hit back for the home team beating Jessie Truman. Then the performance of the evening, when Bland met Ron Watson. The contest went all the way to the final game with Bland down 10-7. But he showed fantastic determination and spirit to win five points on the bounce to take it
12-10 and give Scorpions the edge. Truman senior then sealed the win beating Geoff Sanderson in four. That is now SIX matches in a row that Clifton have lost by the smallest margin of 4-6!
An excellent hat-trick from Josh Drake gave Scorpions H a win against rival team mates from Scorpions K in Division Three. He was well supported by braces from Jack Robinson and Aaran Radford. The only defence for the K team coming from relative newcomer Alex Selway who played brilliantly to overcome Robinson and Radford.
In the latest round of the Sheffield Junior League at the English Institute of Sport Adam Szabo, Lewis Ellams and Amy Marriott from Scorpions turned out to try and go top of their division. In their first match they beat Topspin Terriers by 7-3 to keep them joint top place. Then came the crunch match against Wadsley Bridge from Sheffield. All three Rotherham players put on a gutsy performance but could not beat their rival title chasers and so ended up trailing in second place at this point of the season.
In Division Two of the Cadet National League, against teams from all over Yorkshire, representatives from Rotherham won all three of their matches and are now heading for promotion back to Division One next season. Aaran Radford was top scorer on the day with 9 wins from 9, Alex Selway and Adam Szabo both 7 wins from 9. All three from Rotherham Scorpions Junior T.T.C. put on a tremendous show beating teams from Leeds, Halifax and Keighley.
In Division Three Lucie Smith, Lewis Ellams and Amy Marriott put on an equally splendid display of table tennis. Both Lewis and Amy kept a clean sheet with 9 wins from 9 and Lucie gaining 7 from 9. All three matches were won against opponents from around the county and so the team are well on course get promoted to Division Two next time.
In the Junior section the first team of Alex Bland, Joe Saxton and Edmund Lau managed to win three of their five matches on the day securing third spot for now. Whilst the second team comprising Emily Walker, Michael Taylor and Jessie Truman could only scrape two draws from their matches losing easily to Harrogate, St.Mary’s and Scorpions A.
