Rotherham Advertiser Report Week Fourteen

The New Year brings the return of the Rother Valley T.T.L. season, now into week 14.

In Division One Mason Arms D continue to strive to win their first point of the season playing at their new venue at East Herringthorpe against JSM. Unfortunately Jim Jeickles, Dave Kirkup and Pete Morgan had other ideas and got JSM off to a flying start going 5 – 0 up. This was despite a valiant effort from Alan Wasitnidge losing in the decider to both Jeickles and Kirkup. Ian Burnell hit back for Masons beating Kirkup. But it was not to be and JSM finished it off 8 – 2 on the night.

Division Two saw Phoenix D v Mason Arms E

The Division Three battle for third spot took a decisive step when Scorpions F went to visit Stag B. Youngsters Lewis Robinson and Emily Walker got Scorpions off to a flying start taking the scalps of Stag’s experienced players Brian Jackson and Warrick Plummer respectively. Veteran Eric Hall defeated John Burton to make it three nil and that set the tone of the match. Scorpions eventually coming out 9 – 1 winners to strengthen their hold on the third place.

Robert Vickers, Joyce Fox and Ken Shemswell proved too good and too experienced to allow the novices of Scorpions K to cause them any problems. It was not all plain sailing with a number of matches being closely contested but the only upset of the night for Phoenix E was when Daniel Schofield playing his first season managed to overcome Joyce Fox three games to one. This leaves Scorpions hovering dangerously near the bottom of the division.

Scorpions’ youngster Joe Saxton proved yet again that he is still a force to be reckoned with when he came out as Sheffield Table Tennis League Cadet Champion 2015 on Sunday. Unfortunately his brother Harry could not quite emulate this, failing at the last hurdle, to be runner-up in the junior event. Both play for Scorpions in the Sheffield T.T.L.

The quarter finals of the knock-out cups have been drawn and in the team event there are two all Scorpions clashes between B and C teams and their G and E teams. Mason Arms A is the highest ranked team still left in the competition and they face Scorpions I, leaving Phoenix A to take on Clifton B.

In the pairs knock-out father and daughter partnership of Ade and Jessie Truman take on big hitters Steven Arliss and Peter Morgan jnr. Another family affair see father Andy and son Harry Saxton take on Wilf Ward and Colin Scott from Clifton T.T.C.
