After four weeks of the season there are only four teams with a 100% win record so far in the Rotherham Table Tennis League. Scorpions A in Division One, Scorpions F in Division Two, and Clifton D and Scorpions J in Division Three. Would their run of form hold out this week.
In Division Two Scorpions F faced clubmates Scorpions C. The money should be on the C team but would the match go to form? Alex Bland, Barry Tasker and Gary Cooper turned out for the F team whilst the C team was Alex Selway, Phil Richardson and Lorraine Swift. Alex Bland set the tone for the evening with a quick three game whitewash of namesake Selway. Unfortunately the F team never looked back sweeping their compatriots aside with a 10-0 thrashing going totally against expectations. So that was one of the three divisional leaders maintaining their form and position.
In Division One we saw the first clash between Scorpions A and L.S.M. A. with Scorpions visiting their opponents at East Herringthorpe W.M.C. For the home team was Mick Foster, Mohammed Khan and Gary Firth and for the visitors it was Harry Saxton, Mark Johnson and Craig Hastie. Despite Johnson having a very poor night by his standards Scorpions still managed to take the match 6-4 due to excellent maximums from Hastie and Saxton. Firth, Khan and Foster all defeated Johnson and Foster and Khan took the doubles but Scorpions still came out 6-4 winners, held on to their 100% record and moved to the top of the League for the first time this season.
In Division 3 Clifton D were aiming to keep up their record when they met Scorpions I. Richard Proctor started the ball rolling with a very close win over Amy Marriott pinching it 12-10 in the fifth game. Adam Szabo hit back with another very close match also winning in the fifth against Pete Cox. The next two also went the distance with Julie Beaumont beating Lewis Ellams and Cox beating Marriott. So 3-1 to Clifton but all the first four had gone to the deciding fifth game. The next three went easily to Clifton sealing the win. Ellams tried hard to win one but lost it in five games to Cox. Last match of the night went to Scorpions as Szabo completed a brace with a five game win over Proctor. Two good wins for Szabo but an 8-2 victory for Clifton to keep their record alive.
Meanwhile, also in Division 3 Scorpions J faced Phoenix F in their next match. Phoenix were at home at their base at the Phoenix Sports and Social Club at Brinsworth. Bob Vickers started off by thrashing Emily Walker in three straight games with Alan Redfern and Joyce Fox winning in similar fashion over Dave Grayson and Eric Hall respectively. Redfern then tore apart Walker and Vickers defeated Hall to seal the first point and Scorpions to lose their first of the season. 100% record gone!! Grayson fought back to save some pride beating Fox but the doubles went to Phoenix to win the match. Walker beat Fox later on to get something from the evening but Phoenix ran out 8-2 winners on the night.
So only Scorpions J could not manage to maintain their unbeaten run. At least this is a totally different situation from last time around when they did not gain a point all season.
