In the Rother Valley Table Tennis League the final of the Habershon Cup knock-out event was played at Swallownest Working Men’s Club. This year Phoenix A and Mason Arms A were contesting the title. Opening the contest was Phil Walton against Mick Foster. Walton took the first game but Foster struck back winning the next three. Second match was Mick Bell versus James Houghton in which Bell won the first game in deuce but again lost the next three. Richard Element stepped up in third spot to take on Mick Brookes and as was expected based upon League performance he won in four games. Foster and Brookes won their next matches and then it was Element against Houghton. These two players are the top two scorers for the season in the league so this was going to be a close contest. First game to Houghton 11-6, second game close 11-9 to Houghton again. Element was not going to let it go and he hit back winning the next in deuce 14-12. Fourth game Houghton once again showed his mettle to win 11-9. That really sealed the match and Mason Arms came out winners on the night to become the 2015 Champions in the Habershon Cup.
This time of year is the off season for most players and clubs in the Rotherham area but not so for Rotherham Scorpions J.T.T.C. They have four teams taking part in the Sheffield Table Tennis Summer League (as there is not a Rotherham version) – one in each of the four divisions. Scorpions A were Summer League champions three years ago and set off as the new Rother Valley Champions hoping to maybe double up on the silverware!
In Division One the A team set off with a win against Vulcan C playing away at the latter’s Attercliffe venue. Playing for Scorpions were Alan Battye, Jamie Hudd and Mark Johnson against for Vulcan’s Chris Wallace, Helmut Osborne and Russ Clayton. Hudd won his first having just scraped the first game in deuce winning the next two easily. Second on Battye and Wallace with Battye again pinching the first game but then winning comfortably. Osborne then made Johnson really struggle but the latter just winning the deciding game to make it 3-0 to Scorpions. The match continued this way until game 9 when Osborne manage to defeat Hudd to spoil the whitewash. Scorpions eventually winning 9-1.
In the National Finals of the English Schools Table Tennis Association individuals competition Rotherham were represented in a few categories. In the boys’ under 16 Alex Bland of Scorpions and from Greasborough, actually representing Birkdale School, could not win enough in his group to progress. Meanwhile Amy Marriott from Bramley Sunnyside School was representing South Yorkshire and Rotherham in the Under 11 girls. Amy made a brilliant start to the day and won all her group matches progressing to the quarter finals. Unfortunately that was the end of her day losing in her first match. Also there was Adam Szabo from Bramley Sunnyside School in the Under 11 boys event. He did not have such a good day and was knocked out at the group stage winning only one of his matches. Not a great day for Rotherham junior players but they all made it to the National Finals as South Yorkshire Champions.
