Rotherham Scorpions got the new year off to a flying start as their C team, currently heading the League, won a hard fought battle with Phoenix A. Despite Richard Element’s excellent hat-trick Phoenix could not stop Scorpions as James Grayson, Alan Battye and Jamie Hudd came out 6-4 victors. Meanwhile Scorpions A in second place were playing Scorpions B at their Clifton venue. Mark Johnson, Steven Arliss and Harry Saxton swept their clubmates aside 9-1 with the highlight of the night being Edmund Lau’s win over Saxton to prevent the whitewash.

 

In Division Two Scorpions E were playing Scorpions F. Aaran Radford and Adam Szabo both won their three as the F team squeezed past the E team 6-4. Lewis Ellams, Chris Johnson and Garry Cooper all won one apiece beating Jack Robinson. Also in the second tier, Clifton C gave L.S.M. B a good thrashing 9-1. Russ Clayton and Alan Waistnidge getting trebles supported by two from Andy Baxter. Steve Wilson the only opposing player to get on the scorecard. Clifton D and Phoenix D shared the spoils 5-5 Chris Thompson (2), John Helliwell (1) and Steve Naylor (2) and for Phoenix John Hallgarth (2) and Mo Arshid (2) plus the doubles.

 

In Division Three, Phoenix E’s Maurice Druce, Harry Smith and A Ghosh defeated Riley Astle, Keshav Gupta and Harley Richardson of Scorpions H. Despite trying very hard the three youngsters were no match for the vast experience of the Phoenix players. Also in this division Scorpions K in the form of Barry Tasker (3), Phil Richardson (2) and Ray Jackson (2) were more than a match for Josh Wilkes, Sol Astle and Amy Marriott of Scorpions J. Only Marriott, the current England number one under 11 girl could stop them winning two. Meanwhile Clifton E in the form of Trevor Bland, Pete Gateley and Keith Lund just managed to defeat Phoenix F made up of Joyce Fox, Bob Vickers and Eric Hall. Vickers and Hall won two a piece but Bland and Lund won two each for Clifton with Gateley winning a vital one and the doubles making up the total of 6 against Phoenix’s 4.
