9th October 2021 League Roundup 1

As a result of the pandemic the Ryedale Table Tennis League has been hit hard losing six teams from the last season 18 months ago, reducing the 1st division to 6 teams playing each other 4 times and the 2nd division with 10 teams playing on a  home and away basis.

In Div.1 Swinton welcomed Ryedale C which on paper looked a banker for a draw but the odds were turned in favour of the home team when both  Adam Ridley and Paul Cuthbertson, unbeaten on the night, both overcame the C's tallisman Titch Temple in five. This ensured a 6-4 victory over Temple, Ruth Purseglove and Jan Bryan who all sealed a win each over a rusty Dave Chugg, before Temple/Pursglove took the doubles.

Newly promoted Ryedale D found the going tough at Coneysthorpe who ran out comfortable winners 10 nil,  thanks to flawless displays from Dave Quinlan, Gareth Bryning and Russ Barton overcoming John Gascoyne, Andy Paton and Barry Rudd who all found the opposition too hot to handle.

Tina Wright and Barbara Kearney made their debuts for Ryedale A playing alongside veteran John Flintoft as they took on their B team and enjoyed a profitable match running out 8-2 victors thanks to a star performance from Wright and a brace each for Flintoft and Kearney, the ladies rounding off the night by taking the doubles. In reply Ed Wardman and Mike Fenby pushed their stablemates all the way to take a single each with Andrew Malley still to shrug off the cobwebs.

In Div.2 Amotherby A got their season underway against Ryedale H with a convincing 9-1 romp. Both Alexander Milanov and Malcom Sims hit trebles backed up by Andy Holmes with a double. Several games went to four but Mike Askham and Ian Hutchinson couldn't find those extra points, leaving it to Eric Bell to avoid the whitewash.

Pete Whitfield was star man for Ryedale F with a stand out performance, supported by Andrew Dent and John Draper with a brace each plus the doubles as they overcame Amotherby C's Barry Sunley(2), Ruth Wilson and Barbara Johnson 8-2.

Westow and Amotherby B's match was a close entertaining encounter, eventually falling in Amotherby's favour thanks to an impressive treble from newcomer David Gamble and a double for Ken Darby both taking the doubles to secure a narrow 6-4 victory. A brace for Colin Payne and singles to Sara Winn-Darley and Fiona Hewitt over Rosie Gamble ensured the match was keenly contested.

Ryedale E fielded a strong team of Alan Kirkwood, Barry Todd and John Ellis and they proved too strong for Amotherby D's Andy Studdart and Ellie Smith but seasoned player Linda Clarke's golden display saw her scalp all three before going down 7-3.

It was a tough night for Rillington B's Steve Ellis, Kieran Leckenby and Chris Brown at Ryedale G and with nothing going their way, the home team prevailed 9-1, thanks to a trio of wins for Jean Wardman and Mike Askham plus a brace for Paula O'Donnell.  In reply Chris Brown got the only win when the team deserved more.

In Div. 1 there were big wins for three of the Clubs. Firstly, Ryedale A ,who overcame their 'D' team 10-0, but the whitewash wasn't as clear cut as the score suggests with John Gascoyne, Andy Paton and Barry Rudd all taking games from the opposition even down to the crucial final leg. However in the end Tina Wright, Barbara Kearney and John Flintoft showed their quality, as a team who will be contesting the top spot come the end of the season.

To be a title contender you need to win the vital games and Coneysthorpe did just that against Ryedale C. Gareth Bryning, Dave Quinlan and Russ Barton were pushed all the way by the Rye's Titch Temple, Ruth Purseglove and Andrew Malley, but came out top every time to record a 10-nil victory.

Swinton could be the team to upset a few apple carts this season as they overcame Ryedale B's Mike Fenby, Mike Wheatley and Ed Wardman 9-1.It wasn't all plain sailing as Pat Swindell fell to the resilient Mike Fenby before recovering to take a brace. Fenby was also unfortunate to loose out to Paul Cuthbertson and Adam Ridley in five, both players showing there competitive edge to record maximum points.

In Div.2 a tight match between Ryedale H and Westow saw the home team scrape a 6-4 win thanks to star man Mike Askham with a treble, a brace to Ian Hutchinson and a single for Harry Gascoyne. Westow fought back with a pair to Sarah Winn-Darley plus a single for Colin Payne with Fiona Hewitt battling hard to no avail.

A 6-4 victory for Ryedale F over Amotherby B was a team effort as Pete Whitfield, Rob Williams and Andy Dent all won a brace each. David Gamble replied with two and Ken Darby a single, pairing up to take the doubles, with novice Rosie Gamble still finding her feet and missing out as she continues to improve.

Wendy Prest (2) and Eddie Prest (1) returned to the fold and along with Alan Kirkwood (2) they fought out a draw, 5-5 against Amotherby A who were thankful to man of the match Alexander Milanov with a treble and a Andy Holmes solo effort, before taking the doubles. Simon Milanov putting in a creditable display without reward.

Rillington A opened their account with a thumping 10-nil win over Amotherby C's Barbara Johnson, Alan Mitchell and Barry Sunley who found Tom Brown, Philip Horton and Chris Needham firing on all cylinders to seal the victory.

Amotherby D's Chris Gamble and Janet Bailey both recorded trebles and with Andy Studdart's brace they overcame Rillington B 8-2 for whom Nick Booker won one, pairing up with Chris Brown to take the doubles. Steve Ellis performed well finding the opposition hard to beat.
