Lanchester A V Chargers

Chargers have put together some good results which cements their credentials as a possible promotion contender and this was no exception. Against one of the favourites for promotion Lanchester A, a competitive match was played, which could have gone either way. Lanchester included their three players who are in the top 6 averages for the league, Dave McAllister and the two talented youngsters Thaqib Saleem and Liam Ord, Chargers had the 2 experienced players Terry Charlton and Peter Whitfield with Max Duffin, who is turning into one of the most difficult players to beat in the league. Notable matches were Thaqib v Peter where Thaqib won the first two and looked to be cruising but Peter fought back to 2-2 before surrendering in the final end. Dave McAllister against Max was a marathon with the game going backwards and forwards until Dave with his attacking forehands, won through to take player of the match. The doubles was a fascinating tussle between the two attacking players of Lanchester, Thaqib and Dave, against the consistent returners of Terry and Max. Again the game went one way and the other but the Chargers came through in the end. The final result was 5-5 giving each team a share of the spoils.

Bombers v Mortimer B

Mortimer B were determined for this game not to be a repeat of the earlier fixture when Bombers beat them and turned out the heavy guns of Ray Purves Ian Moore and Dave Bannon against Dan Hutchinson, Lee Maher and Nigel Coe. The reliability and solidity of the Mortimer team with their consistent chop returns wore down the more attacking Bombers and frustrated the home team players into making mistakes. The Player of the match was Dave Bannon winning all three singles and contributing to the doubles win. Best for Bombers was Lee Maher who beat both Ray Purves and Ian Moore, but this wasn’t enough to give Bombers any points in an 8-2 defeat.

Eagles v Lanchester B

Eagles have a large squad to pick from and this week’s team included Jack Pugh, Charlie Coates and Matty Hutchinson against the very experienced John Cook with Lyndsey Beacham and Adam Butler form Lanchester B. The match went to form with Lanchester dominating with only Jack Pugh scoring a victory in a 3-2 win over Lyndsey Beacham. Matty’s game against Lyndsey was a close affair with one end going to 15-17 and Charlie forcing both John Cook and Adam Butler to deuce before losing the ends. Final Score 1-9 to Lanchester.

East Boldon v Desperadoes

Desperados have now got a settled team with a tight squad and are playing competitive table tennis and this match was against a team in a similar mid table position. Playing John Reid, Matt Greenwood and Nigel Duffin, they were up against one of the most successful players in the league Peter Smallcombe backed up by William Walton and Bruce Davison at East Boldon. Peter with his superb all round game won all of his games but was pushed close on a couple of occasions by John Reid and Matt, who took an end off him, Matt beat both William and Bruce and John Reid beat William in a marathon 5 ender showing off all their defensive skills. In the doubles John and Matt combined to beat Peter and guest Jim Collar giving the Desperadoes a point in a 6-4 defeat.
