Chargers v Cram Jaguars

First game of the season and with their star player Max moving up to the Bombers life could prove tough for the Chargers in the 4th division. Captain “Nets“ Peter Whitfield was joined by steady Barry Dingwall and explosive junior Luke Dumighan. The Jaguars had the reliable Mick Sursham, with Phil Smith and the ever improving Ryan Morton.

Peter got off to a good start winning 3-0 but The Jaguars came back to win the next three. In the doubles it looked like Barry and Peter were well away at 2-0 up but Phil and Ryan came back to take it to a final match and it was only with three backhand drives from Barry that helped the Sacriston to a 3-2 win. Peter went on to beat Ryan in the next but struggled against the dynamic play of Ryan but thanks to his nickname he came through 3-1. Barry against Mick was a marathon with Barry going 2 up but he tired and with Mick starting to cope with Barry’s serve he came back to 3-2. Poor Luke was unlucky yet again and took Ryan right to the wire in two ends but crumbled in the third to give Jags a 5-3 lead. Barry struggled against and lost against Phil. Peter won the final match to give him player of the match but the Jags won 6-4.

New Direction v Desperadoes

With a new 5th division in the Summer league there are a number of new teams (particularly from Brandon) in the league and this is an ideal opportunity to blood new entrants to competitive table tennis. New Direction from Brandon with their first game fielded Kevin Richardson, Ken Causey and Barry Dunn and also played Robin Bailey in the doubles with Barry. Desperadoes are using their team to blood new players but also fielded the reliable John  Reid as captain with debutants Neil Coulthard and youngster Chris Jennings. No games were walkovers but John Reid used his experience to take all three singles games and also teamed with Neil to take the doubles . Both Neil and Chris won a game each but with Kevin and Ken winning two each the game ended 6-4 to Desperadoes.

Cram Cobras v Sacriston Bombers

The first game for Bombers after gaining promotion to Division 2 was against the very experienced team of Cram Cobras who included stalwart Alan Hedley with Alastair Johnson and Paul Fairlamb. Bombers had the newly promoted captain 17 year old Dan Hutchinson teamed up with 13 year old Max who was making his debut after being promoted from the Chargers team, alongside the phenomenal talent of 12 year old Peter Smallcombe making his debut for the Sacriston team.

The final score did not reflect the true nature of a fast paced attacking match played with flair and inventiveness from both teams. Of particular note was the doubles game where many rallies started with defensive chops and then exploded into long bursts of breath-taking drives from both teams forcing them all back from the table. This game swung backwards and forwards with first Peter and Dan taking the initiative and taking a quick 2-0 lead, but the partnering of Alastair and Paul and their consistency brought them back into the game and they wore the youngsters down and in a final flurry took the final end. This was however the only Cobras success in a game played in a real sporting manner with the youngsters winning all the singles and showing that they thoroughly deserve their place in the second division coming out 9-1 victors.

Aces v Stingers

Aces had a tough baptism in the first division of the Northumbria summer league(www.tabletennis365/northumbria ) Without their star player, the other three regulars Ian McAllister, Duncan Fraser and Jon Mawson were up against one of the best squads in the league who played Dale Aitkenhead, Iain Wood and Steve Coverdale. The Aces put up a terrific night with very few games being walkovers but only Duncan Fraser managed a win with Aces going down 9-1
