Jarvis run ended by Samsonov

Tom Jarvis found Vladimir Samsonov a step too far after defeating a top-100 player to set up a last-32 clash with the great man at the Portugal Open.

Jarvis was beaten in four straight by the fourth-seeded Belarus athlete, ranked No 23 in the world, ending English involvement in the event.

Earlier, he beat top-100 player Robin Devos in a deciding seventh set to move into the last 32. Jarvis came out on top 11-8 in the final game of a topsy-turvy match which he led 1-0 and 3-2 but trailed 2-1 to his Belgian opponent, who at No 100 is ranked 139 places above Jarvis and was the 23rd seed.

Paul Drinkhall, seeded 28, was eliminated by China’s Niu Guankai in six games.
