The Robert Excell Photography-sponsored South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League
A limited number of games this week as the new Super Singles League took preference. However the matches that were played were big games. In Division 2 Torbay Table Tennis Academy II and Taverners went into the match both unbeaten and first & second in the League. In a cracking match Taverners raced to a 5-0 lead but were pegged back to eventually win 7-3, which gave them enough points to go one point clear of the Academy side at the top of the table at the half way point in their season.
It was a bad week for Torbay Academy III, who not only lost the leadership of the 3rd Division but also got knocked out of the Challenge Cup. Dawlish Diamonds did the damage in the cup beating the Academy side 5-1. While in the league Marldon Badgers had a comfortable 8-2 win over 3rd placed and previously unbeaten Hasbeens, which took the Badgers to the top of the table. Simon & Mike Hern were both unbeaten again in the singles, but a fine effort from Mike Wickens & Joe Smallshaw took the doubles against the Herns. At the bottom of the table Brixham Swifts gained their first victory of the season with a fine 8-2 win over their stablemates the Dolphins. The Tom’s, Mercer & Durrant, both got maximums for the Swifts.
Torbay Academy II faired better in the Challenge cup with a convincing 5-1 win against the Tykes, with Sam Perkins & Dan Barnett unbeaten.
