Robert Excell Photography-Sponsored South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League

With no regular league fixtures programmed, the Cup Quarter Finals took centre stage.  Torbay Table Tennis Academy’s first team of Kris Piwowar, Patrik Cincala & Daniel Brewer look a good bet for retaining both the Challenge Cup and Dyment Doubles Shield. In the Challenge Cup they beat 3 times former winners Halwell 5-0, then went on to beat Brixham Trawlers 5-2 in the Dyment Doubles.  Newton Bishops will have a say in the outcome of the cups as they too have booked a semi-final place in both competitions, defeating Torbay Academy II 5-2 in the Challenge Cup & Brixham Rebels 5-2 in the Dyment Shield.  Taverners, always a difficult team to beat in the cups and last year’s beaten finalist, made their way to the semi-finals with a 5-1 win over Dawlish Diamonds. Bishops Academicals have yet to play Marldon Badgers in the Challenge Cup  & Torre 21 Up in the Dyment Doubles.

A couple of Division 1 games were played, affecting the bottom of the table.  Dawlish Aces’ fine 7-3 victory over Newton Bishops lifts them off the bottom.  Newton Abbot Battlers picked up useful points in their battle against relegation, but eventually went down 6-4 to a Mick Mercer-inspired Brixham Gulls Side. Which leaves last year’s Division 2 champions, Brixham Trawlers, 6 points adrift at the foot of the table.

The big match in Division 3 saw Marldon Badgers narrowly defeat leaders Torbay Academy III. The Academy’s Jordan Hastie collected his 10th maximum of the season but was not enough to hold off the all-round team effort from the Badgers’ Simon & Mike Hern and Rob Smith, who all won 2 singles each.
