PETER NICHOLSON

South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League Chairman, George Breyley, said:

“It is with great shock and sadness that we report the sudden and untimely passing of Peter Nicholson. Peter was a stalwart of the League for many years. He will be remembered as a tough and competitive opponent and valued friend of many League members and a genuine man with a dry sense of wit and humour. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends and our thoughts are with them all at this extremely difficult time.”

Longstanding friends Dennis Gibbs and Keith Hawkins added:

Peter played in our League for 36 years. He served on the committee for many years and became League Secretary in 1994, a position he held for 6 years where he did an enormous amount of work for the League. He was the innovator and organiser of the pre-season invitation tournament, even collecting all the tournament tables in his own van and delivering to venues. In addition to raising funds for the League, he arranged a very successful twin town table tennis visit to Hamelin, Germany. As well as coaching and finding venues to play, he played for the Devon Vets and also in the Exeter and Plymouth Leagues, winning League, Veteran and Doubles titles. He could always laugh at his bad shots although he never came to terms with the combination bats!  Peter's familiar face will be sadly missed.

Following this sad news the Battlers Table Tennis Team have decided to withdraw from the league.

Funeral details will be added to the website when known.
