PRESS REPORT – Sunday 9th Dec

First Division leaders NA Buzzards went down 7-3 to the current champions, Torbay Academy 1, as the champions close in towards the top. Kris Piwowar was again unbeaten for the Academy.  Brixham Sharks, with a 9-1 win over club colleagues the Gulls, take over in the runners-up position. The Sharks’ team of Clive Banham, Gordon Holmes and Bob Parkins won all their singles, but lost the final doubles. Just four points separate the top three teams.

Its tight at the top of the Second Division too. Leaders NA Eagles, with a maximum from Jim McIvor, defeated Taverners 7-3, whilst Torbay Academy 2 closed the gap with a 9-1 win over Marldon, with Esmeralda Suarez and Warren Ngai undefeated for the Academy.  Brixham Pirates are still in touch following an 8-2 win over club mates the Trawlers, Nicholas Shipley with a maximum for the Pirates.  Paul Hine was again unbeaten as the Denbury Tykes just lost out to NA Falcons 6-4.

Torbay Academy 3 head the Third Division, Ben Hoare with a man of the match performance, as they defeated NA Kestrels 7-3. A 9-1 victory over bottom side Brixham Dolphins has put Marldon Tykes level on points with the Academy at the top. Steve Tyler and Chris Garner were unbeaten for the Tykes. Behind the top two, NA Hawks, with a Ben Swettenham maximum, defeated Dawlish Diamonds 6-4.  There was also a first win of the season for Torbay Academy 4 as they defeated their 5^th team 6-4.

The Hasbeens’ 10-0 whitewash victory over NA Kites in the Fourth Division stretches their lead at the top to 18 points, but the Titans in second place do have two games in hand. Mike Coxhead, Alan Tyrrell and Mike Wickens were too consistent for the Kites youngsters. NA Owls, in third place, had Dylan Bayliss to thank for his contribution to their narrow 6-4 victory over Torbay Academy 6.

Leaders of the 5^th Division, Torbay Academy 7, were pushed all the way by NA Vultures, Kacper Piwowar was unbeaten as the Academy sneaked the final doubles in the fifth game to take the match 6-4.  Second-placed NA Ospreys defeated club mates the Merlins 7-3, with Rob Ferguson taking a maximum for the Ospreys. The points were shared in an all-Brixham affair between the Swifts and the Seals

Finally, there was a great contest in the first round of the Challenge Cup between NA Buzzards and Torre Titans, both teams going well in their respective 1^st & 4^th Divisions. With the scores tied on 229-229 at the end of the 6^th set it could’ve gone either way. Despite the large handicaps the Buzzards had to give their 4^th Division opponents, eventually the consistency of the top flight team won through.
