PRESS REPORT – Sunday 27th Oct
There were just a handful of rearranged matches played in the league this week as there were no scheduled fixtures for half term week.
In the First Division there was an excellent match between the top two ranked Newton Abbot teams, the Batmen & Buzzards. The Batmen started and finished the evening well to win the match 6-4. Going into an early 3-0 lead they were pegged back as the Buzzards won the next 4 singles to go in front. But with man of the match Dennis Gibbs leading from the front they won the last 3 sets to win 6-4. Some amazing rallies especially in the attack v defence set between Shaun Gibbs and Kevin Nicholls, with Shaun the aggressor coming out on top. It all rested on the final doubles where the experienced and past Devon Doubles champions Dennis & Shaun Gibbs were playing the Buzzards youngsters of Herbie Sage and Luke Bennett who had never played together before. It went to form but only just as the team Gibbs won 11-8 in the 5th.
As ruthless as ever the Buzzards skipper, Sonja Ryland, rang the changes for the Buzzards second game in three days at Halwell. Needing a win to get back on track she brought in herself and Nick Halse to join Kevin Nicholls and the Buzzards came home with an excellent 8-2 victory. Kevin Nicholls was unbeaten and an inspired David Wadling picked up a couple of excellent singles wins for Halwell.

In the second division the Taverners playing their first match of the season went down 9-1 to NA Falcons. The Falcons’ Mike Dummett, in his first league match for a couple of seasons, secured a maximum as did man of the match Ed Crawford. Martin Dilkes collecting the Taverners point with a fine win over Louis Wilshire.
Marldon, with Ed Thompson going well, rushed into a 5-0 lead against Marldon Tykes in the local derby but the Tykes fought back well only going down 6-4.
Catching up with their fixtures the Taverners had a second date in the week with Newton Abbot TTC. The Kestrels were the opponents this time round and the Taverners fared much better winning 6-4, Colin Harrop with a fine maximum for the winners.
