There was success today for South Wonston players competing in the Hampshire County Closed Championship.
In the Junior Singles event, Harry Gavins was runner up.
In the Junior Doubles event, Harry Gavins & Olly Kierans won 3-0 against the albeit much younger Southampton team of Joe Watkins & Russel Hasan.
In the Cadet Singles event, South Wonston fielded 7 of the 9 entrants, Blake Sanderson, Danny Klinger, Dom Goddard, Ed Robertson, Georgia Barker, Harry Benson & Jamie Klinger. Joe Watkins & Russel Hasan from Southampton made up the 9. The competition was split into 2 boxes, one of 4, the other of 5 with the top two players from each box going through. Valuable experience was gained at all levels and there were some close matches between players of similar abilities, a number going to 5 sets. In the end Blake won his box with Dom runner up and Ed won his box with Russel runner up.
In the first semi-final, Ed beat Dom 3-1 to line up his place in the final.
In the second semi-final, Blake found things a little harder against Russel, losing his early 2-0 advantage but coming through in the fifth to line up his place in the final.
In the final Ed won the first 2 sets to put himself in a commanding position. Blake fought back in the third to take that set but Ed found the extra needed to close out the match and competition in the fourth.
With Georgia taking the Girls Cadet Singles title this meant that 3 trophies were heading back to South Wonston from the Cadet competition.
