National Junior League

Players: Jared Schaller, Harry Gavins, Ollie Kierans

The boys got off to a nervy start against Southampton. Jared was taken to five sets in his first match but overcame his opponent to set the lead 1-0. Ollie was up against their no.1 player, Will Poulter, and unfortunately was outplayed, leveling the score to 1 all. Harry confidently won his next two matches as did the rest of the team to bring the score to Winchester 5 – Southampton 1.

Next up, Weymouth A – a tough team to beat. Ollie played well but ultimately lost out to to Will Joliffe in the first match. Jared won his first match in three to level the scoring to 1-1. Harry also won his match against Ryan Dedman. Jared and Weymouth No.1 ,Will Joliffe, played arguably the match of the day with some blinding rallies but unfortunately Jared lost narrowly in the forth. Final score was Winchester 2 Weymouth A 4.

We played Bournemouth B next, a good team who put up a good fight but we go the better of them across the board. Final score Winchester 6 - Bournemouth B - 0.

Weymouth B similarly stood their ground but again we proved too strong. In the end we won 6-0.

The last matches were against the formidable Bournemouth A team, current leaders in the league. Ollie lost to Bournemouth’s Kai Major in the first match but the scores were close in all three sets. Harry won the first two sets against Ali Malloch but Ali recovered with some slick play to win an emotional match. Jared played a blinder 5 setter against Ali Malloch narrowly losing 13-15 in the fifth and successfully overcame Kai Major which turned out to be the only win for us in that round. Final score Winchester 1 – Bournemouth A - 5.

All in all, another cracking effort from Jared, Harry and Ollie today. We finished second in the league table behind Bournemouth A. With a total of 58 set wins to date, we are looking forward to the final round on the 25th February.

Well done lads!
