Week 6    Commencing 28th October 2013

Premier Division

Runnymede's Kevin Caldon and Stuart Gibbs were in fine form as they inflicted the second defeat in two weeks for current champions Rawreth A. Both players remained unbeaten in Runnymede's 6-3 win. Elsewhere there were close matches throughout the night with Ben Warner winning all three and Dave Colwill and Gary Hartgrove picking up a win a-piece to ensure a 5-4 win for Rawreth C over Thorpe Bay B. The 8-1 scoreline in Hadleigh Forum's win over Rayleigh Mill in no way tells you how close this match was, only one game was won in 3 sets with five of the matches going the full distance. League leaders Thorpe Bay A scored an 8-1 victory over Hullbridge A with hat-tricks from John Poysden and Alex Abbott. Hullbridge's point came from a fine Glenn Johnson win over John Monk. In the final game this week Rawreth B were easy winners over Warehouse A whose consolation game in an 8-1 defeat came from Jim Stait who was excellent in his game versus Eric Green with excellent hitting from both wings.

Rawreth RESSC have continued their good early season form and moved to the top of division 1 with an 8-1 win over Warehouse B. Chris and Mike Worship both won their three on the night and Warehouse's Tony Wright stopped the white wash with a 5 set victory over Michael Nunn. Canvey A have moved into second place, with a 6-3 victory over Hadleigh Forum B. Ray Wilson was in great form and his hat trick, together with two wins from Tony Giddens helped the Islanders secure victory. Unfortunately the Canvey B team were not able to make it a good week for the Islanders as they went down 8-1 to Hullbridge C. Hat ticks from Maxine Abbott and Andy Seaman together with 2 wins from Peter Saunders gave Hullbridge the win. Steve Appleby's hattrick gave Lentern B the base to win their match against Hadleigh Forum C 7-2. Steve was backed by John Lott and Gus Heath on the night with two wins each respectively.

Leaders Invicta A, had a comfortable 8–1 win at Hullbridge F. The plucky home team were well beaten courtesy of Richard Verrinder and Neil Daines. However, the whitewash was avoided by the home team, thanks to a win from Daniel Payne. Second place Runnymede B overcame RESSC 5–4, thanks to a maximum from Phil Digby and two from Macdonald Neife: Ron Coutts scored two for the visitors. Rawreth D brought out the big guns for the visit of Hullbridge D. Andy Nunn was unbeaten and both Jan Thorpe and Colin Barham contributed two each in a 7–2 home win. Paul Ogden captured both these scalps for the visitors. Hockley B visited Castle Point C and took them apart 9–0. There were three wins each for Paul Strutt, Paul Solosy and Tony Vassallo. Hockley’s C team did their best to emulate the B team, winning 8–1 at two-player Hullbridge E. Both Keith Abbott and Liam Squirrall were unbeaten, but Joanne Hills won one for the home side. Improving Canvey C recorded an 8 1 win at home to Castle Point B with Lee McGonagle and Peter Cray both unbeaten. Paul Thompson saved the visitors’ blushes. Basildon Hospital’s 6-3 home win over Warehouse C was the result of the week. Sid Hills was their hero winning all his matches. Mike Smith with two wins and one from Kieran Wood swung the match. Micky Baker won two for Warehouse.

David Barnes, Divisional Results Secretary, 2nd Division

3rd Division

Invicta B still head the table despite a 7-2 reversal at the hands of Warehouse D. Dave Walton with 3, along with 2 each from Graham Back and Jonathan Allen, did the damage. Customs B have moved into 2nd with an impressive 6-3 win against Canvey D, Mark Rose making his debut for the home team and winning two. Richard Kidd was unbeaten on the night with Ross Warner winning two for the island visitors. Rawreth Juniors A move into 3rd, still unbeaten after 5 games, with an impressive 5-4 win against the Nunn Family (Rawreth E). There were many spectators for this one as Andy and Mel train the Rawreth Juniors. The difference on the night was the consistency of Justin Jeffrey who won all three of his games: with Bradley and Dave Nunn winning two for the home team. Overall, a great atmosphere and match and brings the number to 9 of the Nunn family participating and supporting the league overall.

Week 5    Commencing 21st October 2013

Premier Division

Thorpe Bay A signalled that they are very much going to be the team to beat in this year’s Premier Division with an 8-1 humbling of reigning champions Rawreth A. The signing of the talented James Denyer is proving a masterstroke and James, Alex Abbot and John Monk had too much on the night for a strong Rawreth side. There were a number of 6-3 wins this week for Thorpe Bay B and Lentern A over Rayleigh Mill and Hullbridge A respectively and for Warehouse A who, with a solid team performance, overcame Hullbridge B. Ollie Podd, Kim Shead and Sam Langton (playing up) all securing 2 wins. But they could not beat Ian Rattray, who secured a hat trick for the visitors. It the final match of the week a Steve Tillson hat trick backed up by two wins for Chris Jacob was enough to see Castle Point A edge past Rawreth B 5-4.

RESSC Rawreth continued their good early season form with a 6-3 victory over Lentern E. Chris Nunn and Mike Worship were both too good for Lentern E winning their three games on the night. Wayne Farmer nearly won two for Lentern however he lost 11-9 in the fifth to Mike Worship. A Tony Giddens hat trick was enough to give Canvey A the win over Lentern C. Tony, backed by Ray Wilson with two wins and Terry with the single win helped earn a 6-3 scoreline for Canvey. There was a close game between Hadleigh Forum B and Warehouse B with Hadleigh winning 5-4. No game on the night went three straight with four going to five. Tony Jacks was the stand out player on the night winning three for Hadleigh Forum B, and Warehouse's best player was Sam Langton's; whose games all went to five on the night, he managed to win two. The Lentern D team came out 7-2 winners against the Lentern B team with Dave Kirsten and Gus Heath getting hat tricks for the D team.

Just before Halloween, there was a spooky game when Hockley’s B team played hosts to Rawreth D; with only one rubber that went beyond three sets. Three from Tony Vassallo supported with a pair from Paul Strutt and one from Paul Solosy gave Hockley the win. Veteran Ken Field rolled back the years, winning two for Rawreth. In a close match, Hockley C just got the better of visitors Hullbridge D, despite a maximum from Hullbridge’s Paul Ogden. Two each for the home’s side’s Dennis Squirrel and Keith Abbott and one from Ashley Seymour made the difference. The all-ladies RESSC team nearly overcame the all-male Basildon Hospital. However, a Kieran Wood hat trick for the visitors gave them a 5–4 victory. Pam Swan and Sarah Mapes scored two each for the home team. Warehouse C continued their steady start to the season, with a 5–4 win over Castle Point C. In a game where everyone contributed to an entertaining evening, two each from Peter Maslanka and Graham Back and a single from Phil Mardle gave the home team the win. The derby between two-man Hullbridge E and Hullbridge F ended with the F team 6–3 winners. Joanna Hills did all she could for the E team though, winning all three. Runnymede B came out on top on their visit to Castle Point B. Despite a Kevin Caldon hatrick Runnymede A just scrapped past Thorpe Bay B 5-4. Keiran Skeggs, Gurjit Bhambra and Richard Stubbington recording wins for the away side.

Canvey A inflicted the first defeat on Hullbridge C this season by winning 5-4 in what was a close game going the distance and not one player on the night getting a hat trick. Canvey's best players were Tony and Terry Giddens with two wins apiece. Chris Nunn is having a great start to the season and his hat trick helped RESSC Rawreth beat Hadleigh Forum C 5-4. Customs A also had a good win over Lentern B with Roy Thomas and Brian Rackham helping the team to a 7-2 win over Lentern B. A close game between Lentern D and Thorpe Bay C ended in a 5-4 win for Thorpe Bay C. Adam Deadman and Steve Marr both won two for Thorpe Bay, with all of Adam's games going to five sets. Andy Seabrook, Divisional Results Secretary, 1st Division

The top two teams met this week when Runnymede B entertained Invicta A. In a close-fought contest, the home side edged it 5 – 4, thanks to a maximum from Phil Digby. There were two wins also for the home team’s Neife MacDonald and likewise for Invicta’s David Barnes. Lady luck deserted the visitor’s Neil Daines who lost 15 – 13 in the fifth to Neife; and then, in the final, deciding rubber of the evening 12 – 10 in the fourth to Phil. Basildon Hospital had an emphatic 8 – 1 win over Castle Point B. Debutant Errol Anderson and Clive Beauchamp were unbeaten, whilst Tony Ayliffe saved the visitors’ bacon. David Barnes, Divisional Results Secretary, 2nd Division

3rd Division

Invicta take over at the top with their third unbeaten match with again maximums for John Golding, Mike Keeble and Chris Gregory. It does not look at this stage whether anyone will have the strength in depth to topple them with Hockley F being their opponents this week. Hockley D have moved up into 2nd spot following an 8-1 win against Rawreth E, Stuart Adshead and Philip Pond getting their hatricks with Bradley Nunn again winning the consolation game for Rawreth. The last result for this week ended in a 6-3 win for Warehouse D against Hockley E. 3 wins for Steve Bottom and 2 from Chi Cheung gained the victory despite two wins for Matthew Stringer

Week 3 commencing 7th October 2013

Premier Division

Performance of the week came from Thorpe Bay A who are many people’s tip for the title this year. They recorded an unbelievable 9-0 victory over former champions Runnymede A. Runnymede were without Kevin Caldon but none the less had a very strong side out, but on the night they were no match for James Denyer, John Monk and Alex Abbott.

A win a piece for Sid Dorn, Matt Rolfe and Andy Seabrook was all Hullbridge B had to show from their match versus their noisy neighbours Hullbridge A. Gary Baker and Glen Johnson unbeaten for the A-side. Another derby saw Rawreth A overcome Rawreth B 7-2 in a great match with a great performance from Keith Adams a as he got  the better of George Reeves and Adam Brewer in two very close matches

A great match between Lentern A and Rawreth C where all players won something but Charlie Bates was too strong for the Rawreth team. Down to the last game it looked like Rawreth C would maintain their unbeaten record, but James Marshall played well and won the match for Lentern A. 5-4.

The game between Rayleigh Mill and Warehouse A was closer than the 6-3 score suggests, with only 2 games being settled in straight sets. Ollie Podd scored his first premium hat trick for Warehouse, with Martin West backing up with a brace. A point each for the Rayleigh Mill trio.

Finally this week Castle Point registered their first win, a 6-3 victory over Hadleigh Forum and it was good to see Steve Tilson back with a maximum.

1st Division

Hullbridge C are still top of the division after a 7-2 win over Warehouse B. Hat tricks for Peter Saunders and Bill Smith helped Hullbridge keep their 100% record in the league. Mick Tappenden has also had a good start to the season as he earned another hat trick for Hadleigh Forum B; however he was on the wrong end of a 5-4 score line with the Hadleigh C team picking up a good win. Customs A beat Thorpe Bay C with Roy Thomas earning a hat trick although he was made to work for it as Thorpe Bay's John Blackman took Roy to five with Roy winning 9 in the fifth. A Mike Grout hat trick helped Lentern C to a 6-3 victory over the Lentern E team with Mike being assisted by Les Taylor with two wins respectively.
