Matt Rolfe had a good win over Ben Matthews to get Hullbridge off the mark for the season. Ben Warner was in fine form this week and his hat-trick, backed up by Gary Hartgrove with two wins, gave their Rawreth C side a good win over

Rawreth B. Elsewhere Minda Sinkus and Duncan Taylor proved too strong for newly promoted Castle Point A. Barrie Delf and Simon Jacobs providing the resistance from Castle Point with wins over Rob Harris for a 7-2 scoreline. 1st Division

Hullbridge C continue their good early season form with a 7-2 win over Lentern E. Bill Smith and Maxine Abbott both recorded maximums for Hullbridge with Lin Attridge supporting with 1 win respectively. Another team who has started the season well is Rawreth RESSC as they recorded a 7-2 victory over Customs A. Chris Nunn won all his three games in straight sets including a good win over Roy Thomas. Roy was Customs best performer beating both Gary McCarthy and Mike Nunn, who won two games apiece for Rawreth. Lentern D also had a good win over

Hadleigh Forum A. Terry Jasper was in great form for Lentern winning his three on the night with Gus Heath winning two of his three, however he lost deuce in the 5th to Mick Tappenden, who was Hadleigh's best player by getting their two points on the night. Elsewhere a Steve Appleby hat trick helped Lentern B to a 7-2 win over Thorpe Bay C with Thorpe Bay's Adam Deadman unlucky to finish on the wrong end of two five setters.

2nd Division

Form side Runneymede B were too strong for visitors Hullbridge F. A Phil Digby treble and two each for Barbara O’Brien and Neife MacDonald gave them a 7 – 2 win. Daniel Payne won both the visitor’s points. A maximum from RESSC’s Ron Coutts was not enough to stop visitors Hockley B who won 5 – 4. Two wins each for Hockley’s Keith Abbott and Brian Bissenden were supported with the clincher from Dennis Squirrell. Hockley B followed up this close win with a more emphatic result at home to Warehouse C. A maximum from Dennis with two each from Keith and Brian gave them a comfortable 7 – 2 outcome. Warehouse only seemed to wake up in the last two matches of the evening, when Peter Maslanka and Darren Launder won one each. Meanwhile, RESSC’s Ron Coutts was again undefeated when they visited Hullbridge D. His game against Paul Ogden eventually decided the night in RESSC’s favor 5 – 4. Veteran Lou Hopkins had two wins for the visitors, whilst Paul scored two for the home side with Bob Shingleton-Smith and Ann Lane chipping in with one each. Three wins for Peter Cray were not enough to stop Hockley C overcoming visiting Canvey C. Two each from Laurie Witte and Ashley Seymour with one from Paul Henlen gave Hockley the narrow win. Rawreth D entertained a two-man Castle Point B. A maximum from Andy Nunn, with one from Melanie Jones was enough to secure the points. Martin Roberts won two for the visitors and Tony Ayliffe one. Invicta A continued their winning ways, bettering Castle Point A

8 – 1, thanks to maximums from Neil Daines and Barrie Murphy. Richard Riebold saved Castle’s blushes.

3rd Division

Customs B head the table with a maximum 18 pts after another 9-0 win, this time against Rawreth E. Amar Al-Soufi, Richard Kidd and Allan Taberer all proved too strong for the Nunns, Sam, Bradley and Tracy: in their first season in the league, though I don’t think it will be long before they are winning games. The Nunns are fully supporting the league this year with no less than 8 family Members playing in various divisions. Invicta B also have an unblemished record after 2 wins. The ‘experienced’ heads of John Golding, Mike Keeble and Chris Gregory made no mistakes against the youngsters of Rawreth Juniors B. Wakering also had a second win, this time 6-3 against Warehouse D, thanks to a hatrick from Cliff Noakes and two from Dave Accleton. Dave Walton won two for the visitors. The Final result this week was Hullbridge G against Rawreth Juniors A. Hullbridge gave league debuts to 13 year old Adam Jackman and 10 year old Daniel Zeffie. Adam played exceptionally well to win two games with Cory O’Connell scoring the other point for Hullbridge. ‘Youngster’ Andy Deadman retained his 100% and Adam Bradley scored 2. Jacob Brooks scored the other point for Rawreth Juniors A who move up into 3rd place.

Premier Division

The three top teams from last year started where they left off with convincing wins in week one. Champions Rawreth A have added Ben Matthews to their squad and he impressed on debut winning 3 against an experienced Hadleigh Forum side. In the match between Thorpe Bay A and Lentern A Charlie Bates scored an impressive first game win over John Monk, however that proved to be Lentern's only success as Thorpe Bay A cruised to an 8-1 victory with hat-tricks from James Denyer and Alex Abbott. The final game which featured one of the big three was a 9-0 win for Runnymede A over a strong Rawreth B side which included a good hattrick for their new signing Richard Brown. Elsewhere there was a very good start to the season for Rawreth C winning 9-0. It was great to see Ben Warner back playing table tennis after a long lay off. Strong performance from Sid Dorn for Hullbridge who lost 2 games in the 5th end and will be a strong player as the season proceeds.

Hullbridge C are the early pace setters after an 8-1 win over Hadleigh Forum C. Bill Smith and Peter Saunders both recorded their first hat tricks of the season, but Andy Seaman was beaten in 5 sets by Tony Mace which gave Hadleigh their sole point of the night. Lentern's C and D teams met; with the D team winning 5-4 in what was a very closely fought contest. The D Team's Gus Heath proved to be the difference as he won his three on the night, with Terry Jasper and Sue Body getting one game apiece respectively with Terry losing his other two in 5 sets. Canvey A moved into second on the first week with a Ray Wilson hat trick helping the Islanders on their way to a 7-2 win over Warehouse B. Terry and Tony Giddens recorded two wins apiece on the night. Roy Thomas has started the season where he finished off last year with a hat trick, but was unable to prevent his Customs A side going down 6-3 to Hadleigh Forum B. It was a team effort from Mick Tappenden, Dave Woolmer and Tony Jacks with Tony and Mick both taking Roy to 5 games. Don't know if you want me to add this to the press report in the web, or whether it still needed to go through the checking process?
