Essex Bestow Honours on Three Southend Members

Essex Bestow Honours on Three Southend Members

At the Essex AGM in May, top awards were bestowed on three members of the Southend and District Table Tennis League.

Congratulations go to Ken Field, Chairman of both the Southend DTTL and the Essex CTTA, who was given Life Membership to the Essex CTTA.  Steve Kearns, Chairman of the Essex Awards Committee said that Ken was a stalwart of the Southend League.  He brings enthusiasm and energy to the role of County Chairman.  He will change things at meetings and in the in the formation of the Committees when and where he sees fit.  Ken is a strong believer that it is the Local Leagues that run Essex, not Essex that run the Local Leagues.  With this in mind, Ken has opened up communication lines between Local Leagues and the County.  He is a regular visitor to Local Leagues Finals Nights, Presentation  Evenings and any Special Events and can also be seen helping to run Closed Championship at several Local Leagues events.  He likes to see at close hand what the Local Leagues are doing and remains a big supporter of the Local Leagues.  He is the 2011 winner of the County’s Corti Woodcock Memorial Award and he should certainly have been made a Life Member before.

Congratulations go to Dave Bowles who was also was given Life Membership to the Essex CTTA.  Steve said this honour was slightly different category to that of Ken’s.  I think we have spotted the potential and awarded Dave the Life Membership at the right time.  Dave is  currently out in New Zealand at the World Veterans Champs and thanks are extended to Stuart Gibbs for coming up with the excellent idea of passing a letter to someone to hand to Dave at roughly the same time as this nomination was being read at the Essex AGM.  Dave is a frequent and successful competitor on the VETTS Circuit and for the County sides. He is a great supporter of the County teams and VETTS British League and has had a very successful career as a Local League player with  many Tournament wins to his credit.  He is a County Veterans Team Captain and is part of the team that assists Stuart Gibbs with County Junior Coaching.  A hugely deserved recipient of Essex County Life Membership.

Congratulations go to Terry Guymer who was given the County’s Harry Walker Memorial Award.  This is the County’s Players Player award.  Steve said that Terry has always been a good player. When new to the area he appeared in the Essex Mens rankings in the early 1980s. Thirty odd

years later he doesn’t look so different.  Terry has played a major part in helping the County Over 60s team this season and stayed undefeated this year.  In previous seasons he has been  a valuable member of the County’s Over 40 teams. His excellent reach, renowned backhand “dig” and counter-hitting shots have brought him numerous local titles - notably in the now defunct Thurrock League as well as in the Southend, Chelmsford, Basildon and Brentwood Leagues.  Terry is a hugely popular and respected team-player.  An example of this was this year when he helped his team win promotion from the VETTS National League when he was clearly strong enough to play in the VETTS British League.  Congratulations Terry, this award is well deserved.
