Week 4 Reports

Premier Division

Week 4 of the Southend Premier Division bought some tight results, none more so that the 5-4 victories for Hullbridge B and Rayleigh Mill over Rawreth B and Brand Identity respectively. Keith Adams (pictured) and Colin Chatfield made huge contributions by winning three for the victorious sides while there were really good wins from Richard Jackman over Peter Radford and Daniel Zeffie getting one over Rawreth stalwart Babul McLeod.

There was a great team effort for the Hadleigh Forum trio of Dave Bassett, Neal Barker and Hamish Innes as they all won two games each to beat Warehouse B 6-3 with two wins for Mark Rudland and one from Martin West for Warehouse. It was a bit easier for Warehouse A, who recorded a 7-2 win over Stanford le Hope A with both Kim Shead and Martin Turner going unbeaten.

The final two results were predictably big wins for Rawreth A and Hullbridge A both by the margin of 8-1. Rawreth A beat Hockley A with Captain Charles Sweeney dropping the single point to Chris Ballard who is new to the league this year and is already making quite an impact. Hullbridge A swept past Hullbridge C with Richard Brown and Reece Seddon winning all their matches backed up by two good wins for William Skelt who was playing up from Hullbridge E, well played William.

Hockley B are the new leaders in the Division after taking a 9-0 win over Rawreth D. With no games going the full distance, the team of Alex Barnetson, Stuart Adshead and Josh Copeland proved too strong for Rawreth, who were seeing first time appearances for Andy and Mitchell Nunn with Olivia Jones making up the team and leaves them one place off the bottom.

Hadleigh Forum B are the only team who haven’t lost this year, but were given a close game by Customs A, who eventually went down 5-4. Hadleigh Forum continued their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow win over Customs, with the final result only being confirmed in the final end. None of their players could get the better of Roy Thomas though, and his maximum saw the end of John Tendler's previously unbeaten record. Dale Gutteridge picked up the away side's other point with a victory over Dave Woolmer. No luck on the night for Dave Morgan unfortunately. For Forum, Mick Tappenden and John won 2 games each with Dave picking up the other point. A most enjoyable evening was had by all the players.

Hockley C are another team who have only lost once and had a god 5-4 win over Rawreth C. With Dan Patynski and Joe Lock picking up two wins each it was left to Callum Turner to score the decisive point for the close win. Garry Hartgrove, for the visiting team won all three, albeit taking all 3 games to 5 sets. Colin Clements added the other point over Callum Turner in the final game of the night, with Garry McCarthy unable to add to the score.

Hullbridge D had a good 7-2 win over winless RESSC. A great POTM performance from Lin Roff saw her take all three points with Rod Maclennan and Bill Smith scoring two each in support. For REESC, Kevin Smart and Rob Skews scored a point each for the RESSC team. Mention must be made for Mike Worship, who, when playing in his first game of the night injured his back but fought on gamely for the rest of the evening. In the last two matches after the injury he led 2-0 but was unable to win any of his matches.  This leaves RESSC adrift at the bottom of the table with Hullbridge placed mid-table.

Brand Identity B continued their mixed start to the season this time losing 6-3 to Invicta A to gain some welcome points with their first win and lifting them from the bottom of the table. Once again, Mike Piper was the pick of the Invicta team winning all three, with Steve Marr two and Tony Ayliffe, with his first win over Mick Grout taking the final point. For the Brand team, Dave Jacob, Sean McNabb and Mick Grout all score one win leaving both teams in mid-table.

Stanford Le Hope B maintained their top position thanks to a 6 – 3 home win over Wakering. Brian Spencer was again their star performer with a maximum, whilst he was supported by Russell Bright with two and one from Kevin Butler. Paul England got two wins for the visitors.

Hadleigh forum C keep up with Stanford, courtesy of a 7 – 2 home win over Invicta B. Paul Fawell’s unbeaten performance made him POM, whilst Mark Everard and Satwant Gill added two wins each. Neil Daines was responsible for both Invicta’s points.

Joanna Hills again starred for Canvey C, this time recording a hat trick in her side’s 5 – 4 away win at Hullbridge F. Steve Robinson got Canvey’s other two wins.  Toby Zeffie got two for the home side, and Ben Hoskins and Dan Mansfield one each.

Hockley D paid a visit to Runnymede. The home side generously let them come away with a 6 – 3 win. Paul Strutt was the main architect of the victory, winning all his games in a POM performance. Gary Linzell chipped in with two wins and David Cross got the other one. Barry Edgar was the home team’s best performer, winning two and Tina Hutchinson won the other one.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside their control, Canvey’s King George
Pavilion wasn’t available for Canvey B’s home match against Brand Identity C.  So, commiserations must go to the visitors on a wasted journey. The match has been postponed until December.

Despite an undefeated performance from POM Saurabh Mohal, Warehouse C narrowly lost a close encounter at home to Rawreth F. The visitors had two wins each from Botond Mezo and Noah Unstead, together with a singleton from Jack Himpfen-Jones to thank for their success.

3rd Division

Canvey D top the division after a whitewash of the young Hullbridge H team winning 9-0 and losing only one set all night. The experienced team of Ray Baker, Geoff Banthorpe and Gordon Johnstone shared the honours.

The two Stanford teams sit just behind them with the D team second despite losing 5-4 at home to Invicta B. Richard Verrinder was man of the match for Invicta winning all his three with both Jon Gould and Keith Baxter getting a point each. They were always in front on the night despite Mark Farley and Tony Papasifakis both winning two.

Stanford’s C team fared even worse going down 7-2 to a Customs B side boosted by a hat trick from Mark Rose and two each for Amar Al-Soufi and Richard Kidd. Max Russell was the only Stanford player to offer any resistance winning two games. This win pushes the Taxmen up to fourth in the league just one point behind Stanford and with a game in hand.

The two Hockley teams, E and F, both chalked up very welcome wins this week. The E team took on their clubmates from the F team and, after an even start with the score at 2-2, they then romped away with the next five games to give them a 7-2 victory. Young Aaryan Vatsa was the G team’s star defeating the experienced Brian Parker and  Phil Pond both in five sets but he ran into stiffer opposition in Andrew Strutt who, despite losing the first set, nicked a crucial second 14/12, and then won the next two to confirm his hat trick and man of the match status.

On the same night the Hockley F team took on Warehouse D and, boosted by the late inclusion of Alan Tideswell, picked up a first win of the season with captain Graham Gregory winning the last game of the evening to give them a 5-4 win. Four games went to five sets in this close encounter and Hockley only won one of them, but it was a crucial victory with Alwine Jarvis coming back from 2-1 down against Peter Maslanka to make it 4-4 on the night. Alan won his three games with one each for Graham and Alwine whilst Les Carroll won two and Mike Webb and Peter one each for the Warehousemen.
